He relied more on solid tactics than just trying to match the agility of the Zeroes, as any Wildcat jock would have been tempted to do in the merge. He said that knew that all he had to do was keep the numbers in front of his plane as much as possible. He basically took the fight out of his gunner's hands and in doing so forced the Zero pilots out of their 'tail-hunting' agility strengths and into losing head to head confrontations, which was a major weakness for the lightly armored Zero. And if they got sloppy and slow in their turns he was a good enough marksman to lead and drop them. He forced them to play his game... The Dauntless was a lot more robust for taking head shots. One of the reasons for its distinction in having the highest score of all allied planes in tonnage sunk...

Hi Daniel, I remember this being discussed years ago and am so glad that it may become reality! I echo the wishes of the area of operations being in 'real time', for want of a better phrase. The war is going on continuously and we can chose to drop in to an area or airfield where you may or may not meet the enemy. No such thing as free flight, you can try it but may get bounced or find flak curling up towards you. Best of luck with it! I don't have much time to help these days but give me a shout if I can help in any way.

Revealing: Would be a homebuilt in actual terminology. A scaled-down replica of the Dietrich-Gobiet DP 11a Bussard. Built by Dipl.-Ing. Helmut Schneider from Schönow near Berlin 1933/34. Her name is Schwalbe (swallow). Open House

IL-2 '46 has that feature . Makes free flight much more interesting ! I love all the ideas ! Maybe someone in the future will tackle the AI problem so we can add any aircraft to the install and not have to mod the config's. Can't leave well enough alone in my book !

Hi Folks, With Achim's permission, I've uploaded consolidated AFD files for each of his ETO, MTO and EF airfield packages. I've left the Spanish Civil War airfields as original. The reason for this is because the sim can only handle approximately 200 AFD.bgl files in free flight. There are three new aerodromes - Jersey in the UK package, Interlaken and Schwechat in the German package. There are also a few name changes in the UK package - Beaulieu instead of Woolston, Castle Camps instead of Haverhill, Compton Abbas instead of Manston, and Scatsta instead of Gonfirth.

In checking VATSPY this morning, I noticed atc at an airport I had not heard of before and when checked on AIRNAV was surprised it was small though is a controlled airport. I am having more fun lately creating than flying so I checked to see if it has been updated payware or freeware and did not find it for FSX/P3D. Anyone here done it or decide to do it "this week" so I don't spend time that could do a different one? Let me know. I have all my Google Earth photos. I was going to use the default buildings but they just don't do it for me so I will be doing custom hangers in Sketchup and have found out how not to be frame hogs. I have three of my own created airports and even with a lot of AI I did with AIFP3 I am getting in the high 40s with the default fsx. and 30's with a Carenado...

I like that one Rene. So basically free flight but with the war still on with friendly and enemy air and ground traffic still being generated, rather than the danger-free empty skies of normal free flight. I'd have to think through how a flight like that could be generated, but it is worth looking into. I have a similar feature planned which is a throwback to European Air War's Instant Action mode. Basically when you click instant action, will load straight to a mission where you start a couple seconds before a major dogfight breaks out. The mission will be selected at random from a list on instant action missions so you won't know what you are getting yourself into until you're in the cockpit. But what you're suggesting is a bit of a different flavor than that, and I think it would be...
