NORWAY98

6. Some scenery aspects

When you fly in the southern parts of NORWAY98 scenery thera are a few things you must keep in mind.

1.
Fjord-tiles

The sealevel is not allways put on 0 meters. When you enter a fjord and want to follow it till the end you must remeber that sealevel is set to 0 meters in the mouth. Very soon after entering the fjord ( the mouth ) will the sealevel be set 3 - 100 meters. When you approach the end of the fjord the level very often is set to 200 meters. Therefore you must climb to something between 500 - 800 meters if you want a "safe flight level" within the fjords.

2.
The tile staircase

Since FS-default file NORTH.BGL never cares about the Norwegian fjords gives this file a default level of 800 -1000 meters where a fjord i situated. This raised some problems when putting mountains around the these. I had to build a staircase of tiles on different hights around the fjord and put mountains on every step. For every step the level rises between 100 - 200 meters.

Every step/tile is app. 5km. From 400-600 meters follows the default FS-level. I have tried to give every mountain an exact altitude just as it is in reality. So when you are
about to climb over a mountain situated very close to a fjord, you must climb higher than you think you must. You canīt see the true altitude of the mountain before you are "on" the tile the mountain is placed on. You will now and then experience that the mountain will rise under your feet "attacking" the airplane. If you hav climbed high enough you will be able to continue your flight, else you will enjoy a nice little mountaincrash. This risk is not common but it is there if you donīt find a flight level higher than 900 - 1000 meter leaving a fjord for a continuing flight in the highlands. So watch out for these kind of problems in fjords like Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord.

3.
VFR in valleys

Be very careful flying VFR in valleys with roads but without rivers.
Roads have been very difficult to get into the scenery. The mountains take so much room. You must be careful in these valleys. Make sure you have plenty of air under your feet. I have also here built staircases but you canīt be sure.

Valleys with both roads and rivers are reliable. Here and there you will notice stairs going both up and down. You can follow Gudbrandsdalen from Lillehammer and north. I recommend Romsdalen. Start from Bjorli and fly west. Just enter the valley on 800 meters and follow the valley west. you will pass
Trollveggen where parachutists jump from the mountaintops right down to the bottom and very often land in the river.
After passing Trollveggen continue your flight down to Molde and land on Aero- airport. Arne Sundsbo who has made all airports and buildnings for NORWAY98sīsouthern part has his native town here. Thatīs why you can find such a nice city and airport scenery here. Make a quick stop for coffee at his place before you continue your trip.

5.
Lakes and mountain tops

If you like flying seaplanes you just canīt land on every lake. Some lakes are placed on mesamountains without elevated surface. I didnīt dare to make so many elevated surfaces in this scenery, because I donīt know if they affect framerate. Anyway they sometime infect large areas with mountaincrashes. I will solve this
problem, and promise that you in comming version will also be able to land with helicopters on some mountaintops.

6.
Non-crashable mountains

In the area around Wadal and Frya airports is the mountaincrash function removed. Some mountains have been placed upon other mountains and this was something FS disliked. In Kristiansund has the mountaincrash feature also been removed.

7.
Other items

More than 2000 mountains have been designed for the southern part of Norway. I order to keep a high framerate all mountains, lakes and cities have been made with very few points in each polygon. I hope this will not disturb you. Sometimes I think
it all looks a bit funny, but you have to choose between high framerate and just "symbolic" polygons for each feature or slow framerate and realistic formed polygons. The visibility for mountains are set to 50000 - 60000 meters.

8.
Overlapping files - SWEDFLIGHT

Within NORWAY98 are two new files from SWEDFLIGHT added. You can find these files in VERMLAND.ZIP. If you use SWEDFLIGHT you just install these files into the library where you keep your SWEDFLIGHT files. If you donīt use this scenery you just install these files into your NORWAY\SCENERY library. These files gives
you a "floor" for Rakkestad airport.

9.
FS5.1 compatibility

NORWAY98 has been tested in FS5.1 and also on a slow computer. It works ok.

10.
Textures - southern part

Most of the the textures used in the southern part of Norway have been made by Bo Wiberg and Mats Findell, designers of SWEDFLIGHT.

11.
I wonder........?

I just donīt know how Arne Sundsbo can make so fantastic buildings.

12.
Crops-textures

New CROPS.R8, CROPSF.R8 and CROPSS.R8 have been designed for this scenery. They will give you a better "Nordic" view over farming areas in Norway. They are especially made for nordic user who prefer flying in the Scandinavian countries. If your one of us - you just replace the deault FS crops.r8 with these. Very soon will new FARM.R8, PRARIE.R8, BROAD.R8 and TUNDRA.R8 be introduced.

At last I hope you all will like the south part of this scenery. Many new cities, roads, lakes and mountains have been added since NORWAY6.1. Wherever you are in Norway you will now have a scenery. NORWAY98 is fully compatible with the scenery SWEDFLIGHT and the comming SWEDFLIGHT1.1 You must set the right layer between the two sceneries. Give for example SWEDFLIGHT layer 5 and NORWAY98 layer 6. This is important, else will not two airports in Sweden work.

I want very much to thank following persons for making this scenery possible:

Arne Sundsbo for our long friendship in designing and for the reason he is the very best designer of buildings in the FS-world and all his help in the SWEDFLIGHT project.

Svein Holbo for our long friendship, his beautiful sceneries over northern parts of Norway, helpful in the SWEDFLIGHT project and because he is older than me.

Birger Blomvik for betatesting

Peter Jacobson for Airport and Scenery designer in which all this scenery was made.

Mats Findell for flying and photographing our nature and getting nice photographs from wich Bo Wiberg has made most of the R8s.
