    Normandy Scenery

    Hey guys and gals,

I texted Rami this morning about any D-Day specific Campaigns out here.

As far as he and I know, there is no specific Campaign which covers lead up to, during, immediately after D-Day with the landing on the beaches in Normandy.

I flew from Caen up to Cherbourg at 400 feet altitude along the coast today. The current ETO scenery with Rhumba's and SdC's mesh, coastlines, and landclass do not do the coast any favors.
There are no beaches at all, of any width. Not even a yard of sand. The cliffs are rolling hills and vegetation to the Channel.

I'm willing to put in the time to build up German defenses on hilltops overlooking the beaches and begin building the missions for the Campaign.

I am not skilled enough to redo the scenery and actually make Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno, and Sword Beaches.
Is there anyone willing to do so? Without accurate landing beaches, there is no reason to expend the time and energy to build the missions, let alone the campaign.

    Thanks in advance,
    Lee

    DD,
A very worthwhile project. The beaches and cliffs alone would be useful in any European install. I don't know about the cliffs but the sand and shoreline could be done by one of our talented members.

    Ravenna,
That is what I am hoping. I wish I had that talent. I have tried to do scenery files and failed miserably.
I am going to build what I can in MB and attempt to learn how to convert it ti GSL.
I may use FSSC to build some beaches where there is vegetation now......
    We will see...

I just downloaded all of Stuart's Allied and German ships circa 1942-1944 in preparation for my up-coming effort to construct a D-Day Campaign.

I think the AF landing craft will suffice with some troop & supply ships off shore.
I have yet to download the various land forces troops, but will over the course of the next few weeks.

Beginning my research into which RN and USN combat ships were involved in shelling the German installations at the various beaches along with AA ships in the various locations.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.
Anyone wishing to get involved in the project are welcome as well.

I'm sure it's on your list Devildog, but just in case - some years ago Jim Jacobson made a series of Atlantic Wall bunker objects.

I can't see them in the library here but, if we really don't have them, you can find them at Simviation under 'CFS2-Misc':

    Devildog73,

Perhaps this will help as a model....from the 20th Fighter Group.

    Hi DD

I don't know how far into the D-Day story you want to delve. There was a lot of preparation prior and up until the German retreat at the Falaise Gap the Allied forces were pretty well bottled up. Air action around and in support of the invasion was pretty hot until winter too. I guess you could confine it to a few days or stretch it out over a number of months.

Anyway here are four 354th Fighter Group missions starting with escorting paratroop C-47s beginning the invasion on the night of June 5th and supporting the invasion directly up to June 13th. Might give you some ideas.

There's a lot more including moving to France flying from the hurriedly constructed Advanced Landing Ground airfields patrolling to interdict German air response and ground attacks if you are interested. The 354th campaign is a self install so you could even load it up and fly the missions to see if they give you ideas.
    Cheers,

    Captain Kurt

    Thanks Kurt,

I have my maps and aerial photos downloaded and printed.

There were some bombing runs which began 6 weeks out against German fortifications all along the French and Belgian coasts.
    ** I found a CFS1 Dday scenery which actually loaded into CFS2!
It is only Omaha Beach and not exactly where it needs to be due to the differences in sims, but it will work for some reference points.

I will load up those missions you provided and begin the difficult work over the course of the next few weeks.

I am still holding out hope one of our scenery gurus will take it upon themselves to expand the 5 beaches a bit along the Normandy coast and perhaps put some of the small villages (GSL) in where they actually belong.

Here is what Omaha and Utah look like with the CFS1 D-Day scenery.

I flew right through much of it unscathed and shot up a lot of it with no effect.

Not the best screenshots, but here is what I have so far in CFS2 format for Omaha Beach and Ste Laurent Sur Mer.

As you can see; WAY too much vegetation on the rocky cliffs and sandy beaches.
