    WarbirdSim P-51B Skins

Just uploaded a couple of WBS P-51B skins. These are totally reworked skins of a couple of sets I did for FS9. These are NOT converted FS9 skins. They are 32 bit dds. I tried using DXT5 but the compression really made a mess of the subtleties of the excellent paint kit shading textures. There are also a couple of modified bump maps to accommodate a modified fuselage texture and modified drop tank texture.

HERE! The librarian just hasn't gotten to them yet. I'm sure they'll be up in a bit.

Thanks very much guys. Your comments are much appreciated.

Ted, really enjoying the C-97 progress reports, especially the startup and sound evolution, and the videos are just awesome. Great work from the MJ team. Looking forward to its release.

I seem to recall a 1/32nd scale P-51 you did that was very similar to these shown here.

Guilty as charged! Can't believe you remembered that one. "LITTLE DUCKFOOT" modeled in 1975 and depicted late August / early September 1944 Just before Tyler got is new "D" model.

Thanks Mark. The model is going on 40 years old now. I've long since traded in my X-acto knife for a mouse!

Very nice repaints Steve! The oily olive green looks perfect! I prefer the lines of the early Mustangs, however when I would have to take them into combat I think I would have preferred the view from the D version cockpit.

I remember when that model was NEW. You brought it into Bill Northcutts hobby store in Sandy Springs. i was there are recall being amazed by it. You had a great hand with the airbrush and I remember studying it closely.

You, Ficklen, Colvin, all guys whose work I tried to copy especially from a technique point of view. I think I was 13 years old then. 53 now.

Thank you Huub. I've always liked the "looks" of the "B" over the "D". But I agree that the "D" offered a much better tactical view! Seems I was reading recently, can't remember where, that 8th AAF combat pilot recipients of the early "Ds" (that replaced their "Bs") weren't all that impressed with their new replacement's performance as compared to their OLD Bs. Some claimed their new Ds to be less responsive at escort altitudes and a bit slower. I need to go back and dig up those comments.

Man, Eric, those were some fun times. Ficklen and Northcutt could spin some yarns!

Man, Eric, those were some fun times. Ficklen and Northcutt could spin some yarns!

My favorite Northcutt story is: He is flying a T-33 on cross country. Lights up a cigarette. (not supposed to, but did.) in any case hits turbulence or something and drops the lit butt. It rolls under the floorboard beneath the cockpit...still smoking. Smoke starts to fill the cockpit and Bill gets panicked. Decides he has no way other to put this smoking cigarette out than to relieve himself and then empty the relief tube/receptical to put out the cig. So he does this figuring he can explain to the crew chief later.

Well, this does not work. Now he has urine and a smoking cigarette below the floorboards. Desperate now, he decides to roll the plane inverted. Figuring the butt will roll out and wind up in the inverted canopy. So he rolls over. Sure enough Butt comes out. Extinguished by the pee that is now also in the top of his canopy. So, he has to make a decision...to roll the plane back over right side up. And in doing so, douses himself within his own urine and the entire inside of the cockpit.

He had some splaining to do on that one he said. ( I still laugh when I think about this story...I think I have it right!)
