    Icon22 A little spring cleaning...

    Hey guys,

Since I've gotten really far-flung with a bunch of half-started projects, I'm taking a time-out from working on anything new for a couple of months. Shessi's comment about "cleaning out his hard drive" has inspired me to do the same.

I will get back to the Whirlwind and other missions after the first of the year. However, in the interim, I am bringing to light the work of Dominique Herbal, better known to us as Dombral. His works in the French Riviera and Northern Italy are wonderful, and I am taking the files he sent me for France and Italy and working with them to produce something missing from the Mediterranean theatre. (Toulon, Marseille, Genoa, Turin, Venice, etc.)

Following this, I will finish campaign updates using the works of Captain Kurt and Team Daedalus (Tuskegee and Beaus in the Sand are finished, but because they both utilize missions in this region, it's part of the reason to do this) and then release some unpublished scenery enhancements.

    Highpockets,

I will send you some GSL scenery files I haven't released yet while I am finishing up the scenery. Have a e-mail where I can send them?

How could you destroy beautiful St Marks Square Andrew! It's for FS2002 and consequently indestructible but it doesn't appear to affect frame rates. I had to remove six of your buildings and include a flatten in the scenery.cfg file.

    Icon22 Un message pour Dombral...

    En français ...

Bonjour, mon ami!

    In English...

Good morning, my friend! I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas, and that you are in good health and spirits. I wish you nothing but the best during this upcoming new year. Your posts in the French Navy thread reminded me that I needed to provide you with an update on my progress on the Mediterranean GSL work.

The last major areas I have to finish are along the Côte d'Azur. At this moment, I am working on the Imperia sector. I have completed Toulon, Savona, Vado Centro, Venice, Marghera, as well as kept the anti-aircraft batteries along the same coastline areas, as you included.

I have also contacted Achim to see if he can build the airbases which you provided the layouts for. This includes Le Luc, De Cuers, Marseille, and Saint-Raphael. Marseille is the last major project to do, and then the Mediterranean suite, as you called it, will be completed.

I have a couple of ports I'd like to do before I close the books on the Mediterranean scenery.

Question: Would you like me to release the Mediterranean suite separately as a tribute to your work, or would you just like to include a credit in my Mediterranean GSL package?

Seing as how you do such excellent work, I would prefer the former and place it under your name so that people at SOH can see what many of us have known for so long.

Please let me know which you prefer, my good friend.

Question The first time I tried this...

    Good afternoon,

For Porto Maurizio, I've never tried this type of harbor before. I like it. Do you? After this, I have to do the other side...Imperia, Italy.

    Stuart277,

Thank you! Here is the other half of the harbor area...the town of Imperia, Italy. I built it up into the low hills, as in real life, and I chose to work without putting in a flatten switch, so it looks more natural.

    Good evening,

I finished Frejús - Saint-Raphaël this morning, which leaves Marseille and a couple of airfields to finish up, then Dombral's Mediterranean suite will be completed.

    joyeuses fetes

Icon22 CFS2 Mediterranean Francophone for Dombral...

    Bonjour,

    In English...

    Good morning,

Some of you have taken notice of the Mediterranean scenery that I've been working on these past several weeks. Allow me to enlighten you on why I have been working on this.

Some time ago, Dombral sent me a series of missions and campaigns for the Mediterranean which cover missions from 1940 through 1942. The Free French campaign basically covers missions up until the surrender of France on 25 June, 1940.

The other missions included in the package are for Taranto, Dakar, and Operation Torch. Operation Torch is covered from three sides; the Vichy French, the British, and the United States Navy.

In addition, there are a few other 'Easter eggs' which I am finding in these missions. I have also asked Achim to contribute a few airfields for this, and kdriver has also pitched in with some seaplane bases.

There are over ninety missions in the work he sent me. I am determined to make sure that he gets the credit he deserves to demonstrate the French involvement in the war.

Because of some of the aircraft that he uses which I cannot find use for in other campaigns, these missions will likely best be served by creating a dedicated French installation.

    So now you know.

    The France "free of charge"???

Just a minor correction: "gratuit" means "free of charge"....or "gratis"..... Free France should be "La France Libre"...

    Gaucho,

Point well taken. That turned out to be unintentionally funny. My French is getting rusty, which is why I force myself to respond to Dombral in French rather than English.

Had to laugh on this one. While stationed in Stuttgart, working with the NATO French liaisons and being so close to the French-German border I attempted to speak French on several occasions.

My French assistant Liaison Officer would begin to laugh when I unknowingly injected a German word in the sentence I was speaking in French.

I had taken four years of French in school and only two years of German in university. My "mature" brain was not capable of thinking in three languages any longer, so I was thinking in either English or German more than French and then translating in my head. Sometimes the words just came out German when I was trying to speak French. I still understood the good Capitaine when he spoke French, but my mouth just would not go there.

I had the same problem with my German speaking. I could understand what was being said to me, but had difficulty with sentence structure and word usage when speaking back, as Achim knows all too well.

I speak and write GermEnglisch, even after a three year refresher of living in Germany.

I publicly apologize to all the kind German people I offended with my poor use of their language while there.

Truly, if one does not use it, we lose it.

    Tell me about it.... lol

I speak six languages fluently... but I am getting long on the tooth... and I now find myself - sometimes only, luckily - where I can think of some word in five of them but in Spanish, which is my native tongue... At other times... it is the opposite...
Just the other day... talking with my youngest son in NYC who was born in Italy... I was telling him that the only "short pasta" I like is "bow-ties"... which in Spanish is monitas (with the tilde... otherwise is reads "little female monkeys"..lol)... and could not think of the name in Italian (we were conversing in Italian).... and he said: "Dad, it is farfalle or farfalline" (which in Italian means butterflies or little butterflies.. and btw is what they call a bow-tie in Italian)... I had an absolute "senior moment on that one"...

I agree, if we do not use it, we lose it...but, at least with me, I think age creeping up probably makes it even worse... so beware Devildog... you are almost 10 years younger than I... the news for the future is not really auspicious... lol

    ciao, ciao

    Use it or lose it.

I very much enjoyed finding out others have the same language problems is have. I studies 4 different languages in school as I needed to satisfy language requirements for University, but they kept dropping the ones I wanted to take. I ended up with 4 years of Spanish and a year each of (in order) Russian, Japanese and finally German. Now days, I can limp along in Spanish with a good dictionary, but the other 3 are lost causes, I don't even remember the alphabets. Eventually, I expect my English to get spotty as it was never that great to begin with. I never did figure out why my high school offered German, Russian and Japanese, but not French or Spanish. Oh, and my Spanish isn't Western Hemisphere Spanish, but Castillian, which is just enough different to get into trouble sometimes.

Ah well, another month and I will be officially retired and I won't have to speak to anyone!
