    Something you really oughta see!

Probably, you all know about this 1945 USAAF WWII colour documentary called "P-47 Thunderbolt Squadron", but I just found this out while searching for something else on YouTube.

As soon as you see it, you'll understand instantly this H.U. of mine.

Yes, the air war over Italy after the 08/09/43 armistice. There's a scene of a pre-flight briefing where the officer, speaking to the crews, is placing his finger on a Northern Italy map. More specifically on the Appennini mountains, in a spot that shouldn't be more than 50 miles from where I was born.

It sent shivers down my spine and I want to share it with everybody here. Actor, and USAAF pilot officer, Jimmy Stewart introduces it. It's also freely downloadable and I think it's a gem, both for the "secondary" theatre it talks about and for the fact it's a colour film, quite rare for the time.

Rami and Jagdflieger, this is specially dedicated to both of you because you visited this part of the country.

I hope you will all enjoy it.

    Cheers!

    KH,
Back when I was researching for my Tuskegee Airmen campaign I asked Achim to do up some airbases on Corsica just to do some missions with P-47s into northern Italy. He was happy to make the airbases and I appreciate it very much, I have still got that idea in my head and will most likely begin it once I finish with the BPF campaign. I am very close to finishing it as soon as I get my new install finished, perhaps 5-10 more missions.

I too loved visiting those areas of Italy during my 3 years in Germany. Northern Italy is perhaps Italy's best kept secret.

    Thanks for that excellent film!

    Stefano,

I have watched it and immediately archived it for future use. Thanks for thinking of me, and thank you for sharing!

Shoot! I just realized I screwed up the Italian armistice date. And I was telling myself to switch the month with the day for the English format while I was doing it, damn'!

    September 8th, 1943 or 09/08/1943.

    DD73 and Rami:

I am glad you enjoyed it. We even have repaints for Malinowski's P-47D-20, of Lt. Col. Gilbert O. Wymond's D-11 "Hun Hunter XIV" of the 65th F.S., 57th F.G., by Emil Frand here:

    http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...tid=57&id=1919

the very same aircraft and pilot shown in this film, and the later "Hun Hunter XVI" P-47D-30, by Cobrauk here:

    http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...tid=57&id=1945

DD, you might want to include these repaints for your campaign.

Moreover, the day you'd both like to see again this part of the country, let me know and I'll gladly take you to see the neighborhood!
And this time I will make a point in taking you to see the NATO airport of Piacenza-San Damiano, which Achim built for me. It's a promise!

    Cheers!

    KH,

Jodi and I are definitely coming back to visit. Now that I am retired I have the time. Once my Uncle Sam gets the VA straightened out.........(I know), ......... I will also have the money to go with the time. My disabilities from two wars is a bit more than 50%..........

I will coordinate with you as the summer approaches.
