    Kevin,

I had to do the same thing with Turin. Oddly, Genoa was one entry, I think. GSL manager is a strange beast.

    Good afternoon,

Finished...with the layouts, a GSL file, and a mission file with the He-111 that puts you right there. Would there be enough interest to make it worthwhile to do the Firth of Forth?

    Rami,

Looks great to me, I'd like to say I'm very interested in this and any other stuff you turn out for Scotland. But in all honest I'm a million miles away from having my CFS2 near ready for adding stuff like this. Definitely one day though.

Andrew, feel free to add this fix to your ETO ports/targets/infrastructure package, acknowledging, as I know you will, the original work was done by Gary Burns and William Renwick. The more addons consolidated into fewer packages the better.

    Kevin,

I have done just that...and I am in the process of doing a final update to the Battle of Britain and Operation Sealion. For the British, this will include two missions in the North of England on 15 August against Luftflotte 5, one mission against Heinkels of KG 26, the other against Ju-88s of KG 30.

All BoB-era campaigns will have the modified Ventnor, as well as a couple of modifications to my GSL scenery which has already been included in my GSL ports package update, but I am holding back on its release until I get everything together. (One BIG modification in the scenery in The Clyde.)

I have hand-edited all of the missions on the British side, and am in the process of doing so on the German side. (This is so that the AI in a flight all have a different level of skill and aggressiveness) I am also adding the KG 30 mission by Ju-88s from Aalborg on 15 August, which will be added to the Kampfgeschwader campaign. I am waiting for Achim to have some free time to do a few bases in the North of England to facilitate this.

Once these bases are created and the JHS_England package updated, I will re-release all Early-ETO packages and retire them, because there is nothing more I can do with them. (The Battle of France, Battle of France, (Stuka) Battle of Britain, Operation Sealion, Heinkels, Fleet Air Arm, Corpo Aereo Italiano / Chianti Raiders, Dunkerque, Fall Gelb Kampfgeschwader, Fell Gelb Jagdgeschwader, Kondors, and Bardufoss Hurricanes)

    Good evening,

I finished all of the ETO Early missions for BoB / Sealion, now I will move onto the Late ETO missions. I have decided that I WILL use Team Daedalus' Fw-190s in the updates, I think.

    Icon27 Noticing a strange phenomenon...

    Good evening,

I just wanted to pass along some interesting quirkiness regarding CFS2. Above the Arctic Circle, you can get some very weird issues with the water and object placement. I noticed it with creating some scenery at Tromso, where the Tirpitz was anchored late in 1944 after the ship was damaged in another fjord further north-northeast. When you get close to the water with objects placed on land in confined areas, even static objects have a tendency to "slide" as you approach and pass them.

Even stationary ships have this effect. I first noticed this on the Heinkels mission that takes you to Spitsbergen.

Has anyone else come across this?

    Hi Andrew,

Yes, I've noticed this. Things become a bit strange at very high latitudes. Probably something to do with the converging meridians of longitude and the parallels of latitude becoming smaller and smaller circles. As you approach the poles you are unable to proceed past 89 30 north or south.

    Kevin

  12. #87
    Hi Rami,

I've also noticed it. On my experience, it happened only at high latitudes.

I've experienced it on the some of Heinkel's mission & Kondor's mission.

    I agree with Kevin's idea. M
eridians of longitude and the parallels of latitude might be related to this issue.

    Stuart,

Thanks. Those are actually the unfinished pics. It extends from Greenock down to Port Glasgow, but is spread out so that frame rates are acceptable. I just finished Tromso, in Northern Norway, because I am essentially revamping the "Tirpitz" pack in its entirety. I'm making sure that the attacks took place in their proper location, and am also ensuring that there are representations of "Tungsten," "Mascot," "Goodwood," and "Catechism."

"Paravane" will be covered by DamBusters, and because the weather conditions cannot be reproduced in CFS2, I will have to skip over "Obliviate."

Using Baldy's Barracuda and AI Barracuda. and noticed when they AI release their "bombs," they're actually dropping the pilots! How to fix?

    Cool Just in case....

    You are welcome, Rami!

For your future reference, should this unexpected dropping happen again, let me add the following.

I dropped a number of pilots and wing/ventral pylons/carriers, before realising that some addon objects created as payloads needed a different treatment in their aircraft dp from the stock standard.

If we use stock pylons/carriers their dp entry looks like this:

    mount.x=wep_pylon, 1, -1

It is fine and dandy, the pylon does not follow the payload when it is released.

Vice-versa, if the pylons/carriers we are using aren't stock objects together or not with a pilot loaded as a payload, when we see that they are dropped on the target together with their real payloads, the culprit is that -1, that must be replaced by a 0 like this:

    mount.x=RAF_pilot, 1, 0

It fixes the problem definitely. Don't ask me why only certain addon objects behave like this, while the stock ones do not, I don't know. Probably some more knowledgeable SOH friend here does know what causes this bizarre behaviour. Probably it's in the object own dp, who knows?

    Cheers!

Icon22 For Stuart 277, UncleTgt, Kdriver, and Watchdog22...

    Hey guys,

I wanted to pass along something I've been sitting on for a couple of months. Kdriver and CrisGer have been helping me with putting together some historical missions for the Tirpitz, unlike those currently in the library. Kdriver was even generous enough to provide some missions to work with.

I have ripped up and begin to completely revamp the old Tirpitz missions, as well as create new ones to accurately recreate (within the limits of CFS2) the Tungsten, Mascot, and Goodwood raids...all seven of them.

So far...I did a German bomber mission against Tungsten, a German torpedo raid against Mascot, and a German intercept mission against Goodwood. (All of these are fictional, of course, but I thought it would be fun to keep them rather than toss them out)

I completed the first Tugsten Barracuda raid last night, and although getting the AI to attack in a fjord is problematic, Talon is helping me along.

The ships in these raids are now also portrayed with reasonable accuracy....I was able to find a source that gave me the ship names and types. This includes battleships, fleet carriers, escort carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and oilers.

I was also able to get a Hellcat and Wildcat successfully off an escort carrier...it takes practice, and adjusting the ship .cfg files to move the takeoff spot back on the deck. (Thanks, Shadow Wolf)

Not to worry...Kdriver will put these missions through the wringer before release.

I'm doing this in part to thank and reward UncleTgt, Watchdog22, and Stuart for their work with the British Fleet and the RAF over the past several years.

Aircraft involved? Fw-190s, Bf-109s, He-111s, Ju-88s, Fireflies, Barracudas, Hellcats, (FDGv2) Corsairs, (FDGv2 Mk. II) Seafires, Wildcats, (FDGv2) and Lancasters. (For the RAF missions)

And yes, I have corrected the historical locations so that they are in Kaafjord and Tromso. I even did some GSL scenery there, which Kdriver critiqued, and I will correct this week.

    Talon,

Thanks. I am in the process of reversing the player and AI flight paths to reflect the necessary changes.

    Kdriver,

I came across something that would be a fantastic "what if," and I wanted your thoughts on it. After the failure of "Operation Mascot," the British Admiralty attributed the failure of the operation to the slow speed of the Barracuda, and the fact that ones the German defenses were alerted, the Tirpitz could be quite easily blanketed by a smoke screen before the Barracuda could reach the fjord to strike the ship.

Their proposed solution was to fly the DeHavilland Mosquito off of their Fleet carriers to attack the Tirpitz at a high rate of speed, essentially defeating the enemy defenses by getting there before the smoke machines took effect. This was not followed through, because it was determined that they could not be spared from their work over Germany.

As you can imagine, this intrigued me immediately, and so I created a mission test flying the Mosquito off HMS Illustrious with a full bomb load. Making sure I was set on the back of the deck, and having the engines at full WEP before releasing the brakes, I had no problem getting off the deck safely, especially with one notch of flaps. (Also, the wingspan of the Mosquito cleared the conning tower) Given that such a mission is possible, I wanted to ask about logistics. Considering the size of the British fleet carriers, and that they are smaller than the Essex and Yorktown-class American carriers, (at least I think they are) it seemed realistic that they could only load four or six of them onto the decks of each carrier and retain functionality.

My idea then is to put forth a scenario where four Mosquitoes are loaded aboard HMS Furious, HMS Victorious, and HMS Indefatigable, making a total force of twelve. They would carry the usual compliment of Fairey Fireflies, Wildcats, Hellcats, and Corsairs for escort and AA gun suppression. However, it does seem incredibly impractical to attempt a carrier deck landing with a Mosquito lacking an arrester hook, so I propose an alternate scenario. Given that on 15 September, the Royal Air Force used Yagodnik as a base to launch a raid on the Tirpitz, would it be historically plausible to suppose that Stalin has approved the use of Yagodnik for the Mosuqitoes to land after hitting the Tirpitz? (The proposed time frame would be between Mascot and Goodwood, say August 5th, 1944 or thereabouts)

The idea is that after the Mosquitoes made their strike on the Tirpitz, they would turn east-southeast away from the other aircraft returning to the fleet and cross the Kola Peninsula and the White Sea before landing at Yagodnik, near Archangel. I also extended the test mission to Yagodnik, and she got there with plenty of fuel remaining in her internal tanks.
This "what if" mission just seems too good to pass up.

    Good evening,

Now that my internet is working again and I've been given RAF Catterick, I can give you a preview. An intercept of KG 30 over Flamborough Head, as KG 30 from Aalborg crosses the coast on the way in to attack RAF Driffield. Nothing but Spitfires and Hurricanes against 48 unescorted Ju-88s.

    Good evening,

The FAA Tirpitz missions are done, and here is the result of the "what if..."

"title_string"=The Tirpitz raids - "Servants" for the Empire
"summary_string"=Listen up! The time has now come for us to put our training to use. We'll take off from these carrier decks and race down the fjords to hit the Tirpitz before she can throw up her smoke screens! Let's show the Admiralty that given the right equipment, The Beast can be put down! Once we complete our run, we'll turn to the southeast & head to a Soviet aerodrome near Archangel, where we will present these Mossies to Stalin as a gift from his majesty! (The operation was codenamed Operation Servant)
"objective_string"=After the failure of Mascot, the British Admiralty lent serious thought to flying DeHavilland Mossies off Fleet Carriers to execute a high speed assault on the Tirpitz, striking before her defenses could be alerted. If undertaken it would have been done by 618 Squadron, who were training to hit Tirpitz with 'Highball' bombs, similar to 617's attacks on the Ruhr dams. This fictional mission lands at the same Soviet destination as 617 Squadron some six weeks later; Yagodnik aerodrome, near Archangel. The difference is that this mission launches from carriers, not 618 Squadron's airbase at RAF Wick.
"intelligence_string"=You will be the first pilots to take a Mosquito off of carrier decks in combat. Make sure to open the throttles to the full before releasing your brakes. As you make this strike on the battleship, stay low & go full throttle to limit your exposure to enemy fire. Once your attack run is complete, you'll turn southeast toward Yagodnik; this base is three-plus hours flying time from Kaafjord. The Russians will then arrange transportation for all crews involved to return to England. Good luck to you!

Yagodnik is also the name of the area or "Oblast'" where the airstrip is located. It is far enough away from the front to ensure the safety of the newly acquired Mosquitoes.

Do you plan do the mission twice, once with each Mossie as you described me and randomly chose between the two?

    Shadow Wolf 07,

I prepared two missions because I wanted to have a fail safe in case I received a negative response from Just Flight. While discussing this mission with Shessi, Hewman100, and Kdriver, Shessi sent me an example of the DamBusters Mosquito which he modified into an XVI model that cradles two "highball" bombs in its bomb bay.

I have this model because I own the DamBusters pack, but I am in the vast minority. So I have sought permission from Just Flight to include it. Some of you may remember several years ago, I petitioned and received permission from Just Flight to create and release freeware versions of their campaigns (Mosquito Squadron and "Double Trouble" - Mustang Vs Fw-190) which are currently in the library. The two main people I spoke with at Just Flight still work there; one is a member of SOH. Given the fact that this is their property and hence copyrighted, I am going through proper channels to see if I can get permission to include the aircraft, gauges, and the Highball weapon.

If the answer is yes, I will use the mission with the DamBusters Mosquito. If the answer is no, I will use the Brunosk Mosquito, and we may have to develop the weapon on our own, or resort to a conventional strike.

Once I hear back from Just Flight, this will determine the mission I will use. I range-tested both to see if you can make it to Yagodnik, and in both cases you can on internal fuel. You're getting down into reserve-tank range, but you get there.
