    Hey guys,

Although you'll have to bundle up to head up to these latitudes...I am in the process of building a series of historically accurate (at least for the British side) missions involving Operations Tungsten, Mascot, and Goodwood, as well as Paravane and Catechism.

Aircraft used will be Avengers, Fireflies, Corsairs, Hellcats, Barracudas, Lancasters, and Seafires, as well as Heinkels, Ju-88s, and both Fw-190s and Bf-109s.

Although the GSL scenery for Tromso won't translate into CFS3, I can pass along the mission descriptions and ship names to anyone who is interested.

    Good morning,

I sent this to HouseHobbit in an e-mail, but I thought I'd post it here.

    22 August, 1944 - 17:30 hours

"title_string"=The Tirpitz raids - Goodwood Seafire escort
"summary_string"=Attention! The weather has improved somewhat, so we're sending out a smaller fighter force to try & catch Tirpitz off-guard. Hellcats & Fireflies will compose the strike force; Seafires will guard the strike force from any Luftwaffe fighters that may try to jump you. Above all else, make sure that the Hellcats & Fireflies reach KMS Tirpitz unscathed! (The Seafire escort during this sortie is fictional, they were really part of the first strike. However, the other details are accurate)
"objective_string"=At 17:30 hours on 22 August, a second Goodwood attack was launched against the Tirpitz after the weather had marginally improved. This assault was composed of six Hellcats & eight Fireflies, which were able to reach Tirpitz without being spotted. Catching her crew by surprise, they were able to inflict some casualties, though the vessel escaped any significant damage. No British aircraft were lost, but that afternoon, the escort carrier Nabob was hit by a torpedo from U-354, and her damage was severe enough that she was soon withdrawn & headed back to Scapa Flow with heavy protection, including HMS Trumpeter, a cruiser, and several destroyers.
"intelligence_string"=After taking off, the two flights of Seafires will protect the rest of the strike force. Stay with the formation as you head to the Tirpitz, scanning the sky for German fighters trying to jump you. If you do tangle with enemy planes, draw 'em away from the strike force so they can clear the area, & then return to the fleet when the combat is over. If no enemy contact is reported, once the assault on the Tirpitz is finished, you will all return to the fleet. Good luck!

"title_string"=The Tirpitz raids - Goodwood Hellcat attack
"summary_string"=Listen up, chaps! The German battleship "Tirpitz" remains a threat to convoys, despite the effort of previous raids. You'll attempt yet another assault on her using well-placed 500lb bombs to inflict as much destruction as possible, despite the weather. Let's show these krauts that not even this brutal weather can protect them from the Fleet Air Arm!
"objective_string"=On 22 August 1944, the first pair of four carrier strikes launched from three fleet and two escort carriers took place. The strike force consisted of thirty-two Barracudas, twenty-four F4U Corsairs, eleven Fireflies and nine F6F Hellcats. Kaafjord, where "Tirpitz" was berthed, was surrounded by dense cloud cover preventing the Barracudas and Corsairs from bombing, but the Fireflies and F6F Hellcats pressed on their attack. These Fireflies suppressed the flak guns while the Hellcats struck the Tirpitz with their 500lb armor-piercing bombs. No hits were scored and three aircraft were lost.
"intelligence_string"=The Corsairs & Barracudas can't bomb accurately through thick cloud, so if the Kaafjord is covered, they'll abort the mission & return to the carriers. Even if this happens, you'll press the assault. The Fireflies will go after the flak positions, it's your job to make sure the Tirpitz doesn't go unscathed if the assault force fails to rendezvous with you. If they do join up wuth you, assist these Fireflies in hitting the AA positions! Good luck!

"title_string"=The Tirpitz raids - "Operation Mascot" failure
"summary_string"=Listen up! This morning, we are going to follow up the successes of 'Tungsten' by sneaking up on the German battleship & catching her well before she can be covered by smoke! Your Fireflies will join the Hellcats and knock her AA guns out of action, clearing the way for the Barracudas to ravage the German vessel. Let's help our 'cudas knock out the Kriegsmarine's beast!
"objective_string"=On 17 July 1944, the FAA attempted another raid on the German battleship Tirpitz. This was known as "Operation Mascot." At 01:35 hours, a force of forty-four Barracudas, twenty F6F Hellcats, and twelve Fairey Fireflies, along with eighteen F4U Corsair escorts, headed for Kaafjord. They were identified before reaching the ship, and by then, Tirpitz was obscured by smoke. Only two Fairey Barracudas and two fighters saw the ship, other attackers aimed for her gun flashes. There were several near-misses, but no hits. Their follow-up raid against the battleship was cancelled, and the British Task Force headed back for Scapa Flow.
"intelligence_string"=The Fairey Firefly can be a handful to get off the deck, so set full up elevator before flying off the carrier & retract your wheels immediately to gain speed. Once airborne, join the formation and help lead them to Kaafjord. Reaching the coast, you'll fly directly down the Altafjord before making a final turn to set up the Barracudas for a head-on attack against the KMS Tirpitz, while you help to suppress the flak. The AA positions are located on the shoreline, you will assault the positions to the east of the Tirpitz. Let your wingmen lead the way & watch out for AA fire from the battleship!

"title_string"=The Tirpitz raids - Wildcat Flak suppression
"summary_string"=Listen up, chaps! The battleship Tirpitz is nearing operational readiness again in her lair in Kaafjord in Northern Norway. From here she still remains a serious threat to convoys heading for Russia. This morning, we'll assist our Barracudas in the attack on 'The Beast' and hopefully put the AA guns out of action. We must now attack swiftly to beat the smoke and enemy defenses!
"objective_string"=The two carrier-based raids of 3 April 1944 were known as "Operation Tungsten." Their goal was to remove this vessel as a threat to Allied convoys by sinking it. Tungsten's two raids saw sixteen bombs strike the Tirpitz, & strafing inflicted some heavy casualties on her gun crews. At the conclusion of the operation, enough damage was done to put her out of action for three months, but they failed to put her out of action permanently.
"intelligence_string"=HMS Pursuer is ready in position, about 120 miles northwest of the Kaafjord. After taking off you'll help lead the formation to Kaafjord. Reaching the coast, you will fly directly down Altafjord before making a final turn to set up the Barracudas for a head-on attack against the Tirpitz, while you help to suppress the flak. 12 November, 1944 - 06:45 hours

"title_string"=The Tirpitz raids - Escort Operation Catechism
"summary_string"=Attention! The Kriegsmarine battleship 'Tirpitz' is currently moored at an offshore pier just west of the Norwegian city of Troms¯. Though damaged by previous raids, her presence there represents a continuous threat to the many convoys moving vital supplies around the North Cape to Russia. If she can finally be sunk, major Royal Navy warships in the North Atlantic could be released to reinforce the Far East Fleet.
"objective_string"=The thirty Lancasters which bombed the Tirpitz on 12 November, 1944 successfully crippled and then capsized this enormous vessel, thereby putting an end to her sustained threat to vital Allied convoys heading past the North Cape. This was the last in a series of nine major attempts to sink the German battleship.
"intelligence_string"=Lancasters have taken off from a base in Scotland & will attack the 'Tirpitz' from the south. You are to fly off the HMS Formidable to escort them for the last ninety miles or so miles of their run to the Tirpitz from Lake Tornetr‰sk and to cover part of the withdrawal. German fighter opposition can be expected from Bardufoss, positioned around forty miles to the south. Make sure all fighters are kept away from the Lancs. Good luck!

"title_string"=The Tirpitz raids - Stop the enemy raiders!
"summary_string"=Alarm! A large-scale British air raid is inbound to assault the Tirpitz at Kaafjord, & we have hastily assembled some fighters to intercept these enemy raiders before they can get back to the fleet! You must take off quickly and get to Kaafjord, where you can sneak up on the Brits from behind as they withdraw toward the coast! Let's show them that they cannot get to the Tirpitz without a fight!
"objective_string"=A pair of Blohm & Voss BV 138 patrol planes have reported sighting several British aircraft carriers and support vessels off the North Cape, and both fighters & fighter-bombers have been spotted at low level in fjords to the northeast. This mission represents the morning raid by the Fleet Air Arm on 22 August & the raid did inflict minor damage, but it also alerted the Tirpitz and her defenses to the enemy presence. However the fighter intercept is entirely fictional.
"intelligence_string"=Fairey Barracudas will likely be in the formation, as they have replaced the Swordfish. Your job is to hit the Barracudas, Messerschmitts from Banak will handle the enemy fighters. Other types in the formation will likely be a mix of both British and American fighter types, as both are being used by the Fleet Air Arm. Be ready for anything!

"summary_string"=Alarm! Royal Navy carriers & support vessels have been spotted off the Norwegian coastline and it is believed that a strike on the 'Tirpitz' is imminent. If you can decimate the British carriers with your bombs, these attacking aircraft will have nowhere to land! A low-level raid by torpedo-laden He-111s has been timed to coincide with your attack.
"objective_string"=The German Battleship 'Tirpitz' and other capital ships of the Kriegsmarine had proven very useful in raiding the numerous Allied convoys which were streaming supplies into Russia. Allied Forces were aware of this as well, & were hellbent on making sure that they put the Tirpitz and vessels like her out of commission for good!
"intelligence_string"=Our reconnaissance spotters have sighted a major British task force with several carriers. The Brits need to hold this position until they recover their strike aircraft, so this is the time to pounce! Your orders are to bomb the task force from a medium height, while several flights of Heinkels strike the enemy ships with torpedoes.

    Owen,

Thanks for the support. Here is another....

    24 August, 1944 - 15:20 hours.

"title_string"=The Tirpitz raids - Goodwood Corsair strike
"summary_string"=Attention, pilots! The weather report for the next few days looks awful, so we will launch an attack now before the storms close in. Your Corsairs will be part of the strike force, as part of five loaded with 1,000lb bombs. Join these Barracudas and be the raid that earns the distinction of knocking the Tirpitz out of action!
"objective_string"=On 24 August 1944, the third Goodwood raid took place against KMS Tirpitz. These raiders included thirty-three Barracudas, twenty-four Corsairs, ten F6F Hellcats, ten Fireflies, & eight Seafires. The initial force of Fireflies & Hellcats did catch the Germans by surprise, but the primary force had to attack blind. Only two bombs struck Tirpitz; one hit a main gun turret, inflicting minor damage. The other bomb penetrated through five decks, lodging near an electrical switch room. An investigation by German forces revealed that it was only partially filled with explosives. Had the bomb actually gone off, it would have done "immeasurable" damage to Tirpitz.
"intelligence_string"=To try and confuse the German defenders, we are launching from a point southeast of our previous raids. After taking off, you will parallel the coast before flying through Altafjord. You'll attack the Tirpitz with your bomb, and then help protect the Fairey Barracudas on your way back to the fleet. Be careful on takeoff; you have been loaded with a drop tank and a 1,000lb bomb, and because this weight is off your plane's centerline, your Corsair will want to pull to port during takeoff. Good luck and watch out for flak over the Tirpitz!

"title_string"=The Tirpitz raids - Final Barracuda assault
"summary_string"=Attention, pilots! This will be our final attempt to knock out KMS Tirpitz. Your task is to attack this vessel with your armor-piercing bombs, and ensure that you score hits! The more Tirpitz gets hit, the better chance these bombs will penetrate the hull and rip her apart. Let's show our commanders that their decision to send us to destroy this ship was the right one!
"objective_string"=Following the raid on 24 August, HMS Furious was declared obsolete for combat operations, and she returned to Scapa Flow. Their remaining two fleet carriers dispatched twenty-six 'Cudas, seventeen Corsairs, ten Fireflies, and seven Hellcats during the afternoon of 29 August in a final strike on the Tirpitz. The strike force was detected and failed to achieve surprise, and was delayed further by a navigational error. Reaching Tirpitz, their assault was frustrated by a thick smokescreen. Forced to bomb Tirpitz blind, they failed to score hits, and no significant damage occurred. Two FAA fighters were also lost. After this failure, the FAA turned over destruction of the Tirpitz to the RAF. British bombers finally capsized the German battleship on 12 November, 1944.
"intelligence_string"=To try and confuse the German defenders, we are launching from a point southeast of our previous raids. After taking off, you will parallel the coast before flying through Altafjord. The rest of the strike force will protect you and suppress the AA guns, your task is to assault the Tirpitz with your armor-piercing bomb and clear the area. Once this strike is complete, you will return to the fleet and land aboard your carrier, the HMS Indefatigable. Good luck, airman!

    Owen,

Here is one last one....5 August, 1944 - 04:40 hours.

"title_string"=The Tirpitz raids - "Servants" for the Empire
"summary_string"=Listen up! The time has now come for us to put our training to use. We'll take off from these carrier decks and race down the fjords to hit the Tirpitz before she can throw up her smoke screens! Let's show the Admiralty that given the right equipment, The Beast can be put down! Once we complete our run, we'll turn to the southeast & head to a Soviet aerodrome near Archangel, where we will present these Mossies to Stalin as a gift from his majesty! (The operation was codenamed Operation Servant)
"objective_string"=After the failure of Mascot, the British Admiralty lent serious thought to flying DeHavilland Mossies off Fleet Carriers to execute a high speed assault on the Tirpitz, striking before her defenses could be alerted. If undertaken it would have been done by 618 Squadron, who were training to hit Tirpitz with 'Highball' bombs, similar to 617's attacks on the Ruhr dams. This fictional mission lands at the same Soviet destination as 617 Squadron some six weeks later; Yagodnik aerodrome, near Archangel. The difference is that this mission launches from carriers, not 618 Squadron's airbase at RAF Wick.
"intelligence_string"=You will be the first pilots to take a Mosquito off of carrier decks in combat. Make sure to open the throttles to the full before releasing your brakes. As you make this strike on the battleship, stay low & go full throttle to limit your exposure to enemy fire. Once your attack run is complete, you'll turn southeast toward Yagodnik; this base is three-plus hours flying time from Kaafjord. The Russians will then arrange transportation for all crews involved to return to England. Good luck to you!
    "player_aircraft_name_string"=DeHavilland Mosquito Mk. IV
    "airfield_string"="HMS Indefatigable"

The idea of 60 feet off the water at 360mph or 600 km/h upon release is a little daunting...
