Annoying FS9 crash on ground handoff... aaarrrggghhh!!!!

Okay, this has been happening for a very long time now.

When I use ATC and once on the ground, and handed over to Ground, FS9 just stops working. There I am on the taxiway, and .. .that's all she wrote.... Flight Sim stops working. This only happens when I go to acknowledge the handoff. If I ignore and just taxi, no problem. Most of the time I'm flying older aircraft or floatplanes, or going into smaller airports with no ATC so it's not an issue, but tonight, I flew into Goose Bay with the A-26 fire bomber and 'poof'!
Anyone have any ideas... has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks Pete! the info in that thread on re-installing an earlier version of the atc.dll from the Cd.. or my original backup copy of all the folders I made in case my disc became ruined is something I'm going to try. I've had the black screen with the A-26 in Goose Bay now, and at a few tower controlled airports in Greenland with the Dash 7.
    thanks
    Dave
