    Mig-15 HD update

    Hello!

Back to the FS world after some busy months with moving across Europe and back to Norway, buying a new house and leaving the military after 11 years. Not to mention that the computer went dead after the move and that I have been missing internet connection…

The Bear Studios Mig-15 and 17 packs are lost FSX treasures in my mind. Great external and internal models and a big collection of different sub models. What let them down today are their FS9 type 1024x textures and lack of details. I have started on making new 4096 master textures for the Mig-15. The original textures did not differentiate for the UTI or the single seaters, but the new HD textures are made separately for the two main models.

I have been serving at the NATO unit in Papa, Hungary for many years and it was naturally for me to do some Hungarian 15’ paints. Actually there is a Mig-15UTI on static display at the base.
Below are some work in progress shots of Mig-15bis “Red 512” and Mig-15UTI “Red 203”.

I don't seem to be able to find the Mig-15 or -17 anywhere. Anyone got a clue?

    Really nice beginning JensOle.
Both the MiG-15 and -17 are well used in my FS9 'Cold War' setup, be great to have high quality versions in FSX.

The Bear Studios MiG-15 and -17 are both still payware and available from Flight1.com:

    http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=MiG-15
    http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=mig17

The Flight1 purchase routine is a little quirky in that you download the plane package as a .exe file and then when you go to run the file the purchase process starts. $29.95 each for the 15 and 17, they look like nice packages.

Considering how old the original model is, it is amazing how well the model is holding up. The vc is still top notch and with service pack 5 it really fly great in FSX. Only the external textures can look a bit dated.

My favorite Mig-17 model is the 17PF and i'm planing to do the same threatment for the 17 textures as well and paint up a Hungarian 17PF. Maybe a bulgarian bird as well. An Albanian FT-5 could be interesting as well.

Really nice work Jens-Ole, a thank you is in order indeed, and you've made quite a surprising but subtle difference to the 'old' ones.
I flew a couple of the desert camouflaged aircraft and they were very shiny, even the bare metal versions look 'coarse' compared compared to your new pair.
Looking forward to anything else in the MiG fleet you turn your hand to.

OT, I can well understand how 'Real Life' issues intrude on 'Sim Time', we started building a very special house 18 months ago, with a bit of luck we hope everything will be settled by the end of the year!
We are 'in residence' but the work goes on around us .......................................

Looks good! It would be nice to see some Szolnok recce wing camouflaged single seater Bis as well Zsolt!

I have done some work on a new Mig-17 paint kit as well, but it is far from finished. It might seem like an easy job, but to find the reference pictures/info for this kind of of hi res details for all of the fuselage/wings are far from a quick job. Not to mention to get the rivets right...lol

Very nice! I assume it is the same as has been restored? Saw it at the airshow in Kecskemét in 2011 (or was it 2010, don't remember..)

I found this picture collection, it might look like most of the nose numbers were of a local font type with the stencil hold over line.

It was a good show, and the finale for the Mig-29 if I remember right.

When I paint decals I try to find periodical pictures of the operational aircraft as the realism on many restored aircraft are questionable. For me it looks like the restored Mig-15 bis use the "standard" RAF font and not the same font as you can see on the pictures of the Migs while they were in service. So for the best realism it might be good to choose an aircraft on from a picture and hand make the font yourself.

Yeah, me too, I see that RAF fonts

Anyway I went back to the SP3 model, I think it's better than the SP5
Multiple versions to three different pilot helmet, etc.
I forgot which button activates the helmet glass
