XB-19. The pre-war markings made it a little easier, but the properties of the pic, more so.....

Sorry, guess that was cheating of sorts. I just happened to see it when my mouse moved over the picture. But, in all honesty, was going to go through pre-WWII bomber types.

Yes Matt the picture properties make it easy. I will see if I can conceal those in the next picture. Get ready, off to PhotoBucket to post the second picture.

From a design standpoint you'd have to ask 'why?'.

    '.......well....it looked OK on paper'.....

Beech AT-11 Kansan. In the bag was probably money for the payroll!

I first thought it is a Cessna UC-78 Bamboo Bomber, but it doesn't have a glass nose....

I hope you don't mind if I throw in an aircraft.
A friend has one of these out behind his hanger, waiting to be restored.

I could swear that just saw one of these in a documentary recently, and that it actually flew well! Now if I can just remember the name...

The aircraft appearing on the LIFE magazine cover appears to have a twin tail. I don't see any further evidence of another aircraft behind the one in the forefront due to camera angle. It was possibly an early production model.

I expect you're right...as the second pic shows the same model with a bigger tailplane...a 'prettier' solution than the proto's 'afterthought'...
