Stand-Alone Mustang MkIII HB837 AJ-N, No.617 Sqn, 22.6.44 to 2.10 44 Ever trying to improve target marking and thus bombing results, Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire, C.O. of 617 Squadron, had already used Mosquitos to great effect. His logic was that a smaller, faster, more manoueverable aircraft would prove even better. His eye fell upon the Mustang. Noises were made in appropriate directions... A P-51B Mustang was donated by the U.S. 8th Air Force, becoming HB837 AJ-N; Cheshire's first operational use of the aircraft was on 25th June 1944 against a V-weapon storage facility at Siracourt in France. The Mustang was a complete success, and continued to be used when needed by Cheshire's successor, W/C James Tait, until October 1944, when it was finally sent off for a well-earned rest with 38 M.U.
