Attention VISTA users!!

Folks, the moment you have been waiting... for VISTA users!

This is what I have discovered to make it work. If you have a copy of "OFF Phase 2", you can make it work---play the original Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 online.

The main .EXE program is called "Shell.exe" under OFF Phase 2 folder. For some apparent reason, this file was somewhat modified to work for multiplaying after opening the "OFFManager"... Although, it doesn't appear modified (the date) but it is.

If you have OFF Phase 2 installed and had run it once (initialized), you can simply copy "Shell.exe" from OFF folder to your regular CFS3 folder after you have exited OFF. Click on it from there (CFS3 Folder) and you should be able to play online! Is that simple!


***Please Note. If you have recently installed "OFF Phase 2" and received this error, "0x8002801c", open Command Prompt (Run as administrator) and type "regsvr32.exe Msstdfmt.dll" (without quotes) to activate. This is needed to make OFF starts.

Will this permit a player to operate any CFS3 game (OFF, Vista, MAW, PTO, etc.) in a game with another Vista player or simply with/against a player operating XP? I have two indenticle Vista machines in the home on a LAN and get the "mismatch" message no matter what - CFS3, OFF, etc. (Even with both firewalls down and using OFF. Very frustrating.)

The VISTA to VISTA has not been determined yet. I have to test that. However, XP to Vista and Vista to XP works.. so far. Obviously OFF works, but the other add-ons I have not test those yet. This is internet use, NOT lan, sorry.

I did series of test between my wireless laptop (Vista) to my destop (XP) and vise versa (with XP users). I have to do more tests for those who had already requested those questions.. Game Radar and such.. Don't know yet.. I have just used the regular CFS version with the recent update 1.a.

I just tried playing multiplayer on at Air Power's game at 68.99.86.163 using Vista 32 bit and it worked! I set the program to XP SP2 compatiblity and ran it in administrator mode.

Now, my flying wasn't pretty but what a blast to be able to play multiplayer again with Vista.

djees i want it to work but then i have to make OFF P2 to work first, i had no time so far to seek out the problem with my
OFF P2 installation, if some one can help me to make it work there is a particullar file missing where fore OFF P2 dusnt starts.

ive never been so critical about a fact like this one.

i'm going back to XP, microsoft is not able to put some thing in work in orther to make poeple satisfied, i have nothing than problems with my explorer on vista and i cant play online with games like CFS3 this game that i like to play and more like the only game that i cant get online with. sending troble raports to microsoft dusnt solves the problem they dont even look at it. And now they gonna dump it? because of Windows 7, nice work for al the poeple that puts there trust in vista and get it in the stores for me i cant buy windows 7 it will be to expencive XP is already so expencive that i need to wait so i have the amount to buy it.
the problems on a run time error 429 AxtiveX component is till not solved with me i downloaded the new drivers for that and the problem sticks not only that now my main game CFS3 wont start up. Windows 7 will not asjure me that i will ever play CFS3 online not that i'm a freak but if a game so good like CFS3 is not be eble to get online to enjoy playing with others then it is a bummer for a lot of poeple, Thanks microsoft to get something new but i'm very critical on the fact that you never taked the troble to solve the problems that you all new about on vista. I never had a reply on my emails alsow

i'm stil trying to get OFF P2 in to the air and now my main game CFS3 is flikkering like hell ands replying that there are game folders missing i dint even toutch the freaking folders not before not after installing OFF but i installed the new drivers for that AxtiveX error and now i'm having that. This morning my CFS3 worked fine not even one problem now i need to play my campains and missions on Firepower on the Europian battle
ETO works still fine and PTO alsow now my OFF P2 is not and my main CFS3 is out of service im getting realy anoyed i dint have problems before but now im say screw VISTA

Perhaps I am doing something wrong, but the fix is not working for me.

I copied "shell.exe" from my OFF install to my vanilla CFS3 install. When I try to run the application from the CFS3 folder - either directly or as the administrator - I immediately receive the standard message that CFS3 is not working and must close. Therefore, I don't even reach the point of online play.

Any suggestions?

Make sure you are running under compatibilty mode (Windows XP Service Pack 2)

Right-click icon, choose "Properties"...


Try that.
