Beginning a flight on a carrier?

N332DW uploaded a exceptional WW2 carrier; which brings me to ask about starting flights on carriers. It used to be a snap in FS9, as there were/are more than one package to do so.

Recently, I downloaded this offering, found on AVSIM:
Category: Flight Simulator X - Scenery
    Carrier CVN75_V2 North Sea

    Images related to this file:

    File Description:
This is a update version of my scenery DL_CVN75.zip. Changes in Version 2 of the cenery: 1.The Carrier model is now a private object and no longer part of the standard FSX object lib.. This allows the installation and registration in FSX scenery setting to be done like any other addon objects. The registration of the scenery in FSX below " Global, Generic & Vehicle Libraries" is no longer required !!!! 2.Version 2 has more stuff on deck of the carrier. 3.The Number 75 is more accurate according to the real carrier. 4.The ILS frequencies ( e.g. GS) is more accurat adjusted in relation to the cable zone. Scenery: Carrier Group North sea. Close to the Island of Sylt The Scenery includes: - The USS Carrier Harry Truman, CVN 75 with full function as an Airport with ILS approach capability. F18-Fighters and a Navy-Heli on the Carrier. - 2 flying Helicopters over the Carrier. - 4 Navy-Destroyers escorting the Carrier. In addition to the Carrier-Group: - A Oilrig about 30 nm northwest from the Carrier. The Heli-Pat is a landable Platform !! - 2 moving Destroyer based on a "Boats Traffic Plan" which are moving around the group according to the time schedule in the plan.

Maybe I did not understand how to install/use this carrier, but I thought I could begin a flight on it. However, when I select it, my aircraft shows on the screen, flying away from it.

Is there a way to begin a flight on that carrier, or better yet, one of the Acceleration carriers, without doing so in a mission?

    Thanks.

    Hi NC,

Just land on the carrier & save the flight.

It will be there when you "load flight".

    Oh, BTW.

It wont work if you populated the CV via an external app (like AICarriers). If its a scenery object your good to go.

That’s an excellent question, NC. In FS9, carriers were airports, and in the airports database. As such you could save and start a flight from them. But as scenery objects, they couldn’t move… So now we have FSX with moving carriers, which is totally awesome, but the ships are AI objects, so they can’t have NAV aids, and you can’t save a flight to them. N332DW just uploaded his CV-6 (here at the SOH) as a scenery object. You could probably setup an AFCAD for it, and start a flight from it, but it would essentially be an “FS9 carrier” and wouldn’t move.

Most of the carriers start near airports. So what you do is find out what time they leave, you start at the nearest airport in a chopper, and fly to and land on the carrier, shut down to coald and dark wait a few minutes then select the plane you want. Good idea to land right at the back of the flight deck as some planes when they spawn tend to shoot forward even when cold and dark so be ready to hold the brakes on.

Some time back posted in a thread here a method for
locating and also starting from the deck of a moving CV
in FSX. Alas, the forum problems seem to have eliminated
that post as I see none of my posts here prior to Nov. 9, 2008 :(

What you can do is create a flight with a carrier in it and add the carrier to the flight's .flt file as a scenery object. I've never done it, but I know it can be done.

I'll see if it some point over the weekend I can play with that, but I really do have a lot on at the moment and the pile keeps getting deeper. :(

Ok, I spent hours trying to figure this out last night, and couldn't do it. What I want to do is be able to save a flight on a Acceleration carrier, vs a static one. I have tried locating one, but no luck so far. It is easy enough to start a mission, but one option NOT available in missions, is the ability to play back a video of the flight.

I have yet to read any post where someone has been able to solve this!

    Chief,

If you have the original AI Carriers installed I believe it puts a moving one that sails from San Diego to Catalina & back. Find that one & try the method I suggested.

I just reread your post Boomer. I have the updated AICarriers installed; version 2. Does that matter?

A method for locating and getting aboard a moving CVN

Here is how you can put yourself on the deck of a moving CVN
in FSX Acelleration with aicarriers2 installed or with ships placed
using Lamont Clark's AI Boat Utility.

You must have the SDK Traffic Toolbox installed!

Get your aircraft to the nearest airport to the desired carrier.
Pause the sim once you are on the ramp or runway, stopped
    .
Open the Explorer window and UN-check the "Aircraft only" box.
Look down the list for the "veh_car01_high_detail_sm" entries.

Highlight a CV entry. Right-click on the entry and select
    "Set Position...".
You then see the current Lat/Lon and heading of the carrier.
Copy and paste the lat/lon/hdg values to a temporary text file with notepad.

Next, locate your aircraft in the Explorer list and right-click on your aircraft.
Select "Set Position..." and then simply copy and paste
the lat/lon/hdg data from the text file into the appropriate
boxes and set the ALT to 67.2'.

Click "OK" and you should find yourself on deck.

Un-pause the sim and taxi to the catapult! ( SEE EDIT BELOW )

Another method I have used when inflight...
Pause the sim and open the FSX "Map".
Move your aircraft icon to the lat/lon of the CV...
be sure to set the correct heading and altitude and
speed. The ALT should be set to 67.2' for own aircraft. Set speed to "0" or 25kts if CV is moving.

This is less precise than my first method.

    EDIT - IMPORTANT!!!

After getting the aircraft on the CVN deck and BEFORE exiting PAUSE mode,
you need to enter SLEW mode ( Y key ).

Note: if your setup is like mine and slew mode sends you flying in
some direction at high speed, then go to the "Controls" menu and temporarily
    un-check the "Enable Controler(s)" box.

When in SLEW mode, now UN-PAUSE the sim. You should hopefully remain on the deck.
Now you can exit SLEW mode ( re-enable controllers if necessary )

For some reason that only ACES knows, using the "Set position" for this method causes
the aircraft to immediately takeoff at 170 kts or so if you do not use the above SLEW mode
    entry procedure first.

If the carrier you move to is one that has been programmed using the AI Boat Utility
( on a scheduled, defined route ) then you can SAVE the flight once on deck and then
load it again in the future. be SURE to enter PAUSE before saving the flight and when
you re-load it, go through the "enter SLEW, un-pause, exit SLEW" procedure.

Thanks Paul, for the detailed explanation, which I plan to give a try.

Now, will I be able to save the flight, so I won't have to go through the process again?

    Thanks.

OK..I'm having a problem with this procedure now. It USED to work OK
for me but now, when I un-Pause, FSX puts the user aircraft
in flight at 180-200 kts! NOT good!!

I'm experimenting now to see what the problem or solution is.

EDIT: Found a solution...see the edit to the procedure above...it entails entering
    SLEW mode briefly.
