    Talon,

Given the scenery and the Wildcats in the picture... how about Tierra Del Fuego?

The only battle I can think of is the one between 4 F4Fs led by Maj. John Smith and severial Zeros that had been flying escort for some bettys that were trying to locate the carrier Long Island. In that battle Maj Smith scored his 1st kill.Of the 4 F4Fs all were damaged durring the battle. It would take three weeks to repair three of the F4Fs and the forth was a complete wright off. This all happened at Guadacanal.

Note: Of the Zeros that they attacked all made it back to base including the one Smith got credit for.None of this info was known at the time of the battle infact it was not known untill after the war so Smith is still given credit for the kill.

Yes Jagd it is by Florida Island and Iron Bottom Sound.

BTW I read a book about 45 years ago thst told of the first battle off Savo Iasland at Iron Bottom Sound,I think it was called "Iron Bottom Sound"or " Battle of Savo Island" but not sure,it was a long time ago.I do remeber it went into great detail of the battle. The book was at my local library.

    Al,

I must have read the same book about 40 years ago. I'm pretty sure the title was "The Battle of Savo Island." Until I read it, I had no idea that the US Navy had suffered such a defeat and that the naval battles for the Solomons were such bloody affairs. I think that for every marine or soldier that died on Guadalcanl, something like three sailors lost their lives on or around Iron Bottom Sound, the surounding waters of Guadalcanal and the Slot. There are about 50 IJN and Alied vessels lay at rest in those waters, possibly a quarter of them capital ships to include two battleships and three aircraft carriers.

Some other good books on Guadalcanal in my library are:

    Neptune's Inferno by James Hornfisher

Japanese Destroyer Captain by IJN Captain Tameichi Hara

South Pacific Destroyer by Russell Crenshaw Jr.

The Lost Ships of Guadalcanal by Dr. Robert Ballard

I'm expecting a new book, "Challenge in the Pacific" by Robert Leckie (author of "Helmet for my Pillow") in the mail in a few days. It reportedly covers the air, land and sea aspects of Operation Watchtower in a most thorough manner.
    Keep your airspeed up,

    Talon,

I sit here with bated breath anticipating the next release of your project. Please continue with this, I don't want to lose my reason for living, your work is the only that keeps me hanging on.
