If you look on YouTubeyou'll also find a vid of a Centaurus being started for the first time after a major overhaul. That one is now back in its Sea Fury FB.11 for the Royal Navy Historic Flight and is flying again this summer. Not quite as big as a Corncob, but at least as smelly when running!

    Beautiful!
Basic Flying Rules: "Try to stay in the middle of the air. Do not go near the edges of it. The edges of the air can be recognized by the appearance of ground, buildings, sea, trees and interstellar space. It is much more difficult to fly there."

I'm pretty certain that engine is now powering this beast...

Yes, I was going to ask what Corsair is this engine going into?

One of our members at the Classic Flyers Museum down here at Tauranga NZ has purchased a 4360 which he's slowly doing up and hopes to get it running for show.

    Cool, can hardly wait.

As N2056 mentioned, here the engine is mounted. : )

Unfortunately they had some rather severe problems with the engine, only after the first test flight, with the screens full of metal shavings. I don't know if they got a completely new engine, or were able to repair the one they had, but they did get the aircraft back in the air just in time for Reno last year.

Bob Odegaard restored Race 74, with it coming to completion late last summer (the aircraft is owned by Thomas Ungurean). Back in 1999, he completed the restoration of Race 57, which he owned and flew for many years until it was sold to Ron Pratt (in '08 I believe). As many might know, to restore an aircraft to airworthy condition, and to restore an aircraft to absolute award winning perfection, can be two very different things. Although Race 57 was restored to a very high standard, the aircraft, for 18 months (up to about this past fall) was stripped down and re-finished, both on the outside and on the inside (also taking care of the wear that had accumulated in the active years prior), with some items like the instrument panel taken out and redone as well, to match the original. Race 57 is now more stunning than ever.

i've always marveled at the giant prop those things turn. they must have torque from hell

  15. #15
Tons of torque, about 60% more than the R-2800. This proved to be a problem with carrier operations as full power is applied at the start of the takeoff run on a carrier and during landing a pilot would need to apply full power if he missed his approach. With so much torque, it was considered impossible for a pilot to take a wave off during landing. Goodyear installed a 12 inch section at the base of the rudder and vertical sabilizer on the fourth XF2G-1 and it featured an auxiliary rudder. The auxiliary rudder automatically deflected 12.5 degrees to starboard when the tail wheel was in the down position and pretty well eliminated the torque roll when the pilot applied full power.
