2 to consider if you have some salt water in your veins:

Final Patrol by Don Keith - US subs in WW2, includes info on the 17!!! WW2 subs open to the public in the USA

A Hard Fought Ship by Robert Moore and John Rodgaard - story of HMS Venomouw - a V&W DD - quite a vessel!

    enjoy.

If you are a Squid, Fishhead, or a Birdie, some sites that have reading material worth looking at:-

    http://archive.org/search.php?query=Navy
    http://www.history.navy.mil/nan/back...backissues.htm
http://www.awm.gov.au/histories/second_world_war/ Australia in the War of 1939–1945. Series 2 – Navy

A great book about the early carrier battles is "Black Shoe Admiral", fascinating information about the obstacles that Frank Jack Fletcher ( a medal of honor recipient in an earlier war) faced and how well he really did in a complex situation with few resources.

Life ain't simple once you get past 16, And this about the best example I can think of.

Just finished reading Ugly Ducklings: Japan's WWII Liberty Type Standard Ship
    http://www.amazon.com/Ugly-Ducklings.../dp/159114888X

All told, its not the best written book I've ever read, but it is an in-depth and frankly fascinating look at the Japanese Merchant Marine in the later stages of WWII. Lots of detailed vessel schematics as well.
