    a helluva great aviation engine.

I know most of you read the thread title and thought of a Merlin or V-1710 or R2800 or JT8D or PT6...etc

After putting some hours in the A2A accusimmed planes with their great engine simulations. I got to thinking about a great engine that kept my butt alive. I bet it kept alot of yours alive too :D

This one is a bit simpler than most of the engines simulated by A2A, but it is just a simple reliable rugged engine. I am sure a lot of you who are pilots here have ridden behind one of these, and it got you to your destination just fine. It took my abuses with ease when I was a student pilot.

    The great Lycoming O-360.

I've had a propensity for this mill since I was little....

...But with the price of good fuel these days, I think the more modest O-360 may be the smart way t'go.....if'n one wants to actually.....go.

Yes, a simple opposed 4-cylinder engine that just keeps on chugging. These designs basically work so well they're used in lots of applications. Honda has been using them since the 1970s for their Gold Wing touring bikes. BMW uses the 2-cylinder configuration for longer than I have been on the planet.

    They just work !!

I rode motorcycles for 19 years straight (year round) and owned more than a dozen (sometimes more than one at a time) but one of my all time favourites was my BMW R65LS with the horizontally opposed twin Boxer engine. That was a magnificent bike.

the gold wing started life in the mid 70's as a flat four, but 10 yrs later bumped up to a flat six.

but if folks are posting engines they like, i pick this one:

Love my O-360....only thing that would be more beautiful is an IO-360.
Basic Flying Rules: "Try to stay in the middle of the air. Do not go near the edges of it. The edges of the air can be recognized by the appearance of ground, buildings, sea, trees and interstellar space. It is much more difficult to fly there."
