    NAS MEMPHIS 1955

Got pages from friend of his cruize book of NAS Memphis 1955. I was only in 5th grade then. You will notice the young sailors training on Hellcat aircraft and notice the aircraft
that was the cutting edge for that time:

"NARTU" stands fro Naval Air Reserve Training Unit. My Dad taught AT "A" school on the south side of this base (where most of the aviation A schools were).

I go down there at least once a month. The airfield is now Millington Regional Airport. What I believe you called the "southside" is now Naval Support Activity Midsouth. The Navy's Bureau of Personnel is there these days. Sure looks a lot different now.

I noticed the CO of the base is Joseph C. "Jumpin' Joe" Clifton of WWII fame.

Interesting. By 1981, many of those buildings were still there. The giant red and white transistor hadn't changed much, that old control tower was still there, but missing the top bit, and the hangar with all the windows was still there. They did expand the red sign that read "BEWARE OF PROPELLERS", and add "AND JET BLAST"

I was suppose to go to NAS Memphis in 1966 for Aviation Ordnance School (USMC MOS:6511)
but it was such a critical MOS at the time they started a school(6511) at El Toro MCAS in Santa Ana , Calif. then boom ! Across the big Pacific pond to JP and SEA .
