Either the plane is such a recent acquisition that the airline wanted it flying before re-registration processing was complete, or they kept a US registration for tax purposes. (cheaper)

My guess is that Wells Fargo owns the aircraft and is leasing it to LC Peru. Since it's still owned by a U.S. based corporation, the aircraft carries a U.S. registry number.

There are a few aircraft flying (and owned) in NZ with US regs - mainly business jets (Global Express, Falcon 900 etc etc)...I understood that it had to do with resale value - and tax advantages.

I also know of a few lighter GA aircraft here with US regs ...but I guess that is becasue they havent yet gone to expnse and trouble of changing the registration over.

We have a -8 flying people around here in Afghanistan on contract, I finally took down the N# N437YV, and found her in her glory days with Mesa airlines. Currently sporting an all white paint.

I think it's also a way of getting around the "first of type" certification issues in the country and all the bureaucracy and cost that goes with it.

But the crew have to have US aircrew licences.

A quick description of aircraft leases...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_lease
So this may be a short-term contract (charter) or a wet lease of a US-registered aircraft.

In the case of Wells Fargo "owned" aircraft it is often a bit more complex. Here's a quote from a WF FAQ:

    10. I've seen an aircraft listed for sale, and Wells Fargo is named as the registered
owner. How do I purchase this aircraft?
While the aircraft may be registered in our name, we act only at the direction of the
Beneficiary of the trust. The Beneficiary of the trust is the one to contact, but due to
confidentiality restrictions, we are unable to release any information about the Beneficiary.
You can fax your contact information and...

    https://www.wellsfargo.com/downloads...Lease_FAQs.pdf

So in this case, a person or corporation owns an aircraft - places the title in a trust agreement; contracts with WF to manage the trust; WF does what is instructed or uses it's discretion to get best value from the asset (in this case, leasing the aircraft to a company in Peru). As far as the details of the agreement, or the owner and lessee, sometimes it may be best not to ask...

Not as odd as it sounds....when you take a loan out for a car, you do not own it.

It might be registered in your name, and the maintenance is done by you, you insure it, you and your family operate it....

But the BANK owns it until you complete your loan agreement and get the pink slip. After all, they're the one's who paid for it.

    Airplanes aren't that much different.
Basic Flying Rules: "Try to stay in the middle of the air. Do not go near the edges of it. The edges of the air can be recognized by the appearance of ground, buildings, sea, trees and interstellar space. It is much more difficult to fly there."
