Thought the airport was in the next valley. Was a little surprised to see the runway show up a bit early. Hope the passengers and llamas didn't mind the slightly aggressive descent pattern.

Maybe the wind has chills in Cajabamba? Cold feet?

Cold feet and I nearly soiled my britches. Came in a little hot and a little higher than we wanted to. But like many before, I thought I could get her down and stopped in plenty of time before the cliff face showed up in the window. Still going about 60 mph, we were running out of grass and it looked like a crash was pending. With a few seconds to go I decided to unlock the tailwheel and try to groundloop the ship and hope for the best. Well, we spun around and had slowed just enough to keep from dragging a wing tip, ending up 180 degrees from our approach. Dodged a boolit for sure. Phew!

Good job Moses, been holding off on that gravy run to see how many craters I'll have to dodge in the runway. Glad you're not one of them.

That Aviaco flight training manual sure comes in handy, eh?

Saddling up for Huaraz. WX report looks keen. Keeping eye open for craters of gravy as we depart...

Note: Have Aviaco manual open to "emergency procedures" page.

Those silly ex-Navy pilots. It's always about the beans. Navy beans perhaps?

The Pratt & Whitneys were really gasping this hop. Had the 161 creaking like an old wooden rocking chair. Found a decent valley and followed Highway 20A for a spell down to the foothills.

Some hearty souls live up this way. Have a whale of a headache from the thin air. Pretty much a straight shot across the top out of Lima. Picked up 370 on the ADF and pointed her right in.

It think it was MaddogK who coined the moniker "inviso-strip" for Puno. Had a few minutes of panic when the airport didn't show up on time. Thankfully we eventually spotted it and set down pronto. Nice little tailwind scooted us along as well.

Of note: One of the crates we carried this leg had "Musical Instruments" stamped on the side. I had to peek in and was floored to see several brand new Martin D-28 acoustic guitars. Wow! Was temped to squirrel one away while no one was looking. Attached is a photo of Hank Williams (at the mic), chording a C major at the Grand Ole Opry in 1952. That would be a Martin D-28 he is playing.
