    Alphasim's Russian bombers.

Had some time to revisit a few classics in my hangar:

    The Tu-22 'Blinder':

    The Tu-22M3 'Backfire':

    And the Tu-160 'Black Jack':

Very, very nice, love the paintwork on them, also the ladder details. Excellent models by the look of it.

Great pics, the bloopers are great to. Going to have to collect these if they are still available. Another day/week/month though I'm afraid.

All three have been rereleased under the Virtavia label Jamie; you can buy 'em at Simmarket or at Flightsim.com. Prices have been lowered a bit I think.

Bloopers or too much vodka in the cockpit??

My favorite Russian jet bomber is the now freeware Alphasim Badger.

Forgot about that one! Still a pretty good aircraft. Sean Doran did plenty of repaints for that, but I think they're lost now with the demise of Netwings?

Never let it be said that our Russian friends don't know how to make great looking airplanes!

Nice Shots, Ferry... I have always liked the looks of Russian aircraft. Especially the Cold War planes. The Tu-22 'Blinder' has a definate "sinister" look about it...

Yep, the Blinder does look interesting!
Typical late '50 'area-rule' fuselage combined with typical Tupolev details like the drooping wings and the gear pods.
The flight model is very well done and not the easiest to fly! The engines lack power in the lower RPM range and are slow to respond, agility decreases as speed builds up from 'mediocre' to 'non-existent'; the roll rate should be measured in minutes, not seconds and the QE2 can out turn it easily. Landing is fun too, as there are no speed brakes to slow it down so you'll need to think a long way ahead; especially since the full flaps stall speed in 150 kts! And if you slow down a bit too much the slow throttle respons will not get you out of problems.

The Black Jack flies more like the Concorde with limited G's before overstressing. The Backfire is the easiest and most fun to fly (Once you get used to the automatic wing sweep/flaps that is) of the three.

I wonder if those big wheel pods also acted like Kuechemann Carrots, a device to assist the aerodynamics at transonic speeds.

The Convair 990 used two carrots per wing to up its speed a bit.

Very nice set of shots. The bloopers are fun as well.

The carrots seem to have worked quite well on the Convair 990 in very early flights with AA it flirted with the speed of sound. That means parts of the airframe already exceeding it.
This lead to skin wrinkles and other damage and a reduction of her Mach limits as I was told by my friend Joe who flew the airplane for AA.
