    Can't install CFS2 on XP; 'memory could not be written' error

    Hi Folks,

    New to this forum; glad I found you all !

    I'm trying to install CFS2 on Dell XPS gen4 computer, windows XP SP3, Pentium4 3.2 gig
    2G Memory, Nvidia G Force 6800 video card.

    The 2 CD's install but I get the following message when I try to run the program:
    ==============================================
    CFS2.ICD Application Error

    The instruction at "0x00421254" referenced memory at "0x94681091"
    The memory could not be "written"

    ===============================================

    I have changed compatibility modes to Windows 95, 98, 2000 etc to no avail.

    Someone suggested to update Codecs which I found at this site:

    XP Codec Pack 2.5.1
    Homepage: www.xpcodecpack.com

    ================================================
    Any suggestions? anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks in advance

    Regards,

    Mike

    Welcome aboard CFSGUY!

    I've never come across that particular issue, but I can assure you that XP normally handles CFS 2 quite well.

    I'm sure that one of our gurus will have and answer soon.

    I had a similar error report appearing, usualy when I closed applications. Didn't bother me too much.
    One day I ran "memtest" from a ubuntu live cd. Found one of my ram sticks had a few bad bytes in the upper addresses. Changed the stick. Error went away.

    Try re-setting the "cfs2.exe" file in file properties to run as administrator....worked for me using Vista.

    Something to try I guess. But all other apps work fine except CFS2

    Someone suggested that I may have a corrupted/missing DLL File.
    Anyone heard of this?

    Hi C,
    A few thoughts/ideas:-

    If you have two sticks of RAM (and willing/able to, with power off)) remove one stick of RAM and try re-install (after un-installing the original installation), if a prob then try the other. If only one stick or still faultly try another stick of RAM.

    It's strange that it loaded ok but won't run. There may be a possiblity that your start disc is scratched. Check your discs, clean carefully and see if there are any scratches that could cause a prob.

    What screen resolution are you running? CFS2 default is 1024x768, try that res and see if that works.

    Mike I haven't heard of anything like this.

    CFS2 is pretty self contained (not registry dependant). Once installed in its folder. As long as there is a windows OS with directX 7 or later it will run. It is quite possible to install it to an external drive then play it another machine.
    It does not require any extra codecs or anything that is not on the disks. DirectX and adobe reader are both included for Win9x folks.

    You are not convinced this is a hardware issue because other programs run fine.
    Would that include other graphic heavy games?

    The error report says that an instruction in the program stack referenced a memory address that could not be written to. May be the error is in one byte in the stack, not at the address referenced. Given the complexity of these systems it is entirely possible that a fault in memory could only effect one application.

    I hope you find a fix, what ever it might be.

    MY 2 CENTS

    This may sound silly, but I have had some similar problems on another program. Check to make sure all your anti-viral software is OFF before installation. Sometimes a a/v may "see" something it senses is viral and rejects it. May be left field but try it.

    I'm running 1024X768, the disc semms to not have any scratches.

    If I had Ram problems, wouldn't that be showing up in other apps? I run many flight sims, but this one seems to have the memory problem.
    I try to take the RAM out to see if that's the problem though.

    Thanks
    Mike

    Simonu,

    I tried your suggestion and removed the 4 512 RAM sticks; didn't make any difference. I still the this:

    ==============================================
    CFS2.ICD Application Error

    The instruction at "0x00421254" referenced memory at "0x94681091"
    The memory could not be "written"

    Maybe time to get a new computer

    Friends, this is a little late in the game, I looked this up and for future reference to you all, this problem of CFSGUY's, along with the "generic host processor failure", are symptomatic of XP Service Pack 2.
