Curtiss AT-9 Jeep

Hi Guys,

I'm busy working on a Curtiss AT-9 Jeep in Gmax and I'm almost finished with the exterior and getting ready to model the interior. Cockpit information has been hard to come by and I was wondering if anybody had any cockpit photographs in their collection?

In particular, I'm looking for photographs of the seats and the inside of the cockpit doors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have looked high and low for pics of the inside of the AT-9...and came up empty handed. There are only 2 AT-9s in existance. One is fully intact and is at the USAF National Museum in Dayton, Ohio. The Other is about 50% intact and is being reconstructed by a group out west someplace. Finding interior shots of the AT-9 is going to be a real treasure hunt.

Wish I could have supplied you with the material you need...as I would really love to have an AT-9 with a VC. Such a wonderful little trainer. I have read many accounts from WWII pilots who said that they used the AT-9 to prepare them to fly the P-38, when they should have used the P-38 to prepare them to fly the AT-9.

I believe the other aircraft is with the Pima Air & Space Museum in Arizona.

I was considering contacting the USAF National Museum but after reading the research policies on their website I realised they would probably not be able to help me. I can't say I blame them as I'm sure they get a lot of odd requests.

I called the Missouri Historical Society and bought a bunch of photos for around $25.00. I think their are about 60 photos of the AT-9 mostly during construction. Good stuff. I built a 60" model of the plane about 25 years ago and flew it on controline. It now sits in the Pima Air Museum here in Tucson. I'm now drawing plans for an 80" model that I plan to do a better job on now that I have more info. I did T-58 from a set of William Wylam drawings and had only a very small side photos of T-58 for reference. Would anyone know if the T in T-58 would designate Tinker AFB in Oklahoma? I can't seem to get a reply from them. George Gobel was a flight instructor in AT-9s in Oklahoma although I don't know which base. The drawings I'm using now are 1/24th scale by Paul Matt. The plane depicted is U-124. I think all AT-9s from Yuma had "U" at the beginning of their hull numbers. They are better drawings than I had before. I now have T-58 as the wallpaper on my computer and looking at the photo, it is obvious that there are colored stripes running around the cowlings and nacelles. Would anyone out ther have a clue as to what those colors might be? Ant help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Bill Oldham

I seem to recall hearing George Gobel was also a Martin B-26 IP, but again no info on what base or what specific time frame. Makes sense, though, as that was another hot twin.

Several years ago we got a box set of video tapes of the best of Johnny Carson. While on Johnny's show, George said then that he was based in Oklahoma. Also, did you know that Bob Barker ( The Price is Right ) was a Corsair pilot?
I live in Tucson and saw the hulk of what's left of the fuselage of the AT-9. A friend of mine here in Tucson hiked up there with his sons to find the wreck and to see if it could be recovered, which it eventually was of course. That plane got caught in a box canyon in the mountains near Truth Or Consequnces NM. There wasn't enough power for the plane to get out of it so he just bellied in on some flat ground. Both men walk away from the wreck. The landing gear ended up on some farmers field equipment and the rest picked through by souvenir hunters. In Dayton where 909 sits, the museum had another frame they were using to finish the one that they have. Then the one here in Tucson was found and brought here to Pima. Unfortunately the spare at Dayton was hauled off for scrap before the people here in Tucson realized that it was available. What a shame. I was lucky to get a photo-pack of about 35 color photos of the one at Dayton from a now defunct company. Lots of good stuff for the serious modeller and i imagine they could be copied using a good scanner if anyone would be interested. The only thing it doesn't have is interior shots. The ones that I do have a very good though and I am relying on these more for detail in my drawings. Bill

I have several good shots of the interior of the AT-9 cockpit. They include several of the dash as well as the inside of both doors and such. If you like I can find a way to email them to you if you like. No charge. Just want to help out an AT-9 guy. ill
