    Looking to add landable carriers?

I would like to add some landable aircraft carriers to FSX. I found the following file on Flightsim.com:

    FSX - FSX Scenery
    FSX Project Nimitz
    [ Download | View ]
    Name: nimitzca.zip Size: 22,187,536 Date: 08-06-2008 Downloads: 1467
FSX Project Nimitz with deck fix. A carrier for use with naval aircraft with tailhooks; the on-deck trap wires work.

After unpacking the file, I am at a loss about how to install it. There's a separate Uninstall directory, and a backup copy of the carrier. Apparently, it is installed to the aircraft directory? But how would I use it as scenery?

    Confused as always,

It's in the aircraft directory because it's "flyable". Meaning it can be used in multi-player, where someone operates it and then others land and take off from it. The other way is for you to operate it while recording it with F.S. Recorder, and then you can play it back to land and take off from.

It's not scenery in the normal sense, just another vessel for you to operate.

Just get "aicarriers2" by Lamont Clark. With that utility you can add
carriers plus escorts anywhere you mare flying by using a menu on the
    FSX toolbar.
The ships are moving and the carriers are landable.
The file should be available in the Avsimlibrary.

this particular file is actually a poorly ripped off version of the Acceleration carrier is did for the folks at Flightsimnation.com which uses auto-installer- he even neglected to change the thumbnail - basically - this guy ran the auto installer in a temp directory and then zipped the temp directory -
    oh well whatever,
and yes it's an aircraft not scenery

One that I am interested in knowing if it works in FSX is waikato.zip at AVSIM.

It is a nice carrier in FS9 with AI planes and a lot of support ships in New Zealand.

It would be the first add on scenery I would put in FSX when I get it.

FS9 static carriers tend to have issues in FSX, because the way that flatten/exclude files are done has changed significantly.

That said, I believed, prior to the removal of their forums, a number of people had got the Alphasim Big-E working in FSX and I know for certain that the Abacus Flight Deck carriers (in FD3 was it? The one before the "current" version that uses the Accel carriers) worked because I had them running until AICarriers2 replaced them.

The first thing I'd install, though, if I were you, is AICarriers2. You can still have support ships, but you can't have AI. Landing on a static carrier is far easier, but you can have AI. I'll lose the AI for the moving ship any day. Sorry!

As a very new recruit to FSX and carrier op fanatatic, with some hesitation I have experimented with FS9 carrier port overs, namely the Carriers2006 freeware and AS Big E for FS9. With both they install and appear normally as scenery and all textures appear correct. The problem I am finding with the Carriers2006 - not so sure it's evident with the Big E yet but it may well be - is that I get a building crash flying even as far as a mile away from the boat, I expect for the reasons noted above.

This addon just knocks me out - and a radical departure from FS9, in that this is really an AI "aircraft" rather than a scenery with two, no three important differences:

    • unlike FS9, it has a hard deck and is landable (AI carriers generally are not in FS9);
    • the cv - and there are cool escort ships you can mix and match - actually moves with a visible wake while you practice your traps and cats (watching the carrier group below you move up the "Slot" in the Solomon Islands while flying CAP, for example, is very cool)
    • you add the carrier/carrier group after entering the sim by clicking on the toolbar - so take off from e.g. Oceana VA, head out to sea, turn into the wind, click on the toobar and you then add the ships e.g. directly below, or 1nm or 5nm directly ahead of you. They magically appear. You can then config for a trap right away and launch and repeat as much as you like.
    • NB: two things: watching traps in replay you will not see the carrier and as this is not "scenery" your placement of the ships will not remain permanently after you exit the sim (but you get used to just adding the ships on your next flight how you like).
Well I've been to one World Fair a picnic and a rodeo and that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard come over a set of earphones.

You can also set up a keystroke or a button to achieve this - I use shift-ctrl-s to bring up the selection window, rather than reaching for a mouse.

That's a great tip Ian. Don't you need more than a single keystroke i.e. to get the ship(s) moving and select the type of ship(s) in the menu?

DOH, never mind. :costumes: I see, you avoid using the mouse and get the menu and can just punch in on the number pad.

Anyway, thanks for the good tip!
