    Kiwi!

Kiwi! is an animation about a Kiwi - a type of bird that cannot fly, who spends its whole life working towards achieving his dream. The kiwi strived to create the illusion that it was flying over a forest as it soared down through the sky from the top of a cliff. Thus, the kiwi spent what must have been its whole life nailing trees to the side of a cliff. All this, to fulfil its one dream of flying, even though it was technically unable to. There are several powerful messages behind Kiwi, but mainly, it makes you think: no matter how absurd and seemingly out of reach your dreams are, what's stopping you from achieving them? Kiwi's had a huge online success, with currently over 1.75 million views and 9000 comments on the online video site 'YouTube' in approximately just 3 days. The animation has been recently featured on YouTube and currently ranks in at the #1 favorited video in the arts and animation category of all time. As I'm sure you'll agree, "Kiwi!" is an inspiration to us all.

Yup, Kiwi has come and gone a few times in the past few years...of course we'd like to claim him as our own, but it took a New Yorker to make...

Now: Would it be a better or worse tale, if he had a parachute?

well, considering he can only be dead otherwise, i'm going to vote parachute.
otherwise he just committed suicide for a ride of a few seconds.

I liked the impact sound at the end! Reminded me of the Roadrunner cartoons when Wile E. Coyote falls off the cliff. Very clever animation.

I thought it was "moving" as in emotionally moving, but in a kind of odd way...hard to explain! I guess you have to realize all the hard work Kiwi had to go through, just so he could experience the illusion of one single flight.

for me, suicide represents a denial of hope. a thrusting away of any and all possibility of tomorrow and what that will bring. my best friend/brother lays in the hospital right this very minute from a gunshot wound to the head that may or may not be self-inflicted. it's hard for me to view suicide in a "philosophical" way since this happened.

It's simply "plan B" for me.

There's 1001 reasons to commit suicide and all of them are valid. Whether they can be comprehended by an ousider, however, is a different question.

Good point! So many times, after a suicide, we make or hear comments like: "But he/she was doing so well! I don't understand!"

Wow! I'm not sure what to make of this ...

Of course I'm going to have to approach this with an engineering mentality and that says, that logically, the Kiwi was created not to know flight, to assume that he has a concept of it goes beyond what was ingrained in the bird from the begining.

Yes, I know its a "cartoon", but I just don't see it.

The noise at the end of the film was rather telling. Bad taste or all in good fun? I dunno.

    Color me confused ...

sorry, but i don't see it as ever being a proper solution to a problem.
it's a selfish, defeatist, coward's move. i've had big problems in my life, and suicide has never been an option. a real man (or woman) picks themselves up, dusts themselves off, and finds a way to move on. there's ton's of people throughout history who have done huge, amazing things in the face of great diversity and horrific tragedies. you ever hear of helen keller trying suicide? how about Horatio G. Spafford? (i know many of you have no idea who he is)
lance armstrong? you get the idea. my opinion, ymmv

    It does...it surely does.

I'm okay with the concept, it just turns disgraceful if you harm outsiders along the way, e.g. by throwing yourself in front of a train instead of just hanging yourself in your basement or attic.
