    G'day dementor338,

    Welcome to the Outhouse

thats a broad question mate, which type of addon do you wish to make?

    aircraft
    vehicles
    effects
    scenery
    buildings
    repaints of aircraft skins
    user interface
    etc etc

for any 3d models you need a 3d modelling program (most use the free product called Gmax by discreet).

the rest is a matter of looking at the files curently in game and backward engineering how its been done, then applying your new idea's.

any of the list above (apart from scenery this is the hardest part of all to alter, and only a few have cracked it), the rest however is more than doable without any specialists programs (other than GMAX).

give us an idea of were you want to go, and then we can start helping you get there.

    regards Rob.

Hey Captain Winters how are ya?

I would like to chip in on the Aircraft Skins department. I just got a wonderful World War Two vintage Combat aircraft book and the paint jobs are amazing. I want to try some of them out on existing aircraft, but I want to know where to start from.

    Hi AT,

I'll email you some information on what you need and were to get it, to get you started on the skining road.

    start with Martin wrights site:

    http://www.btinternet.com/~mnwright/

scroll down and download the DXTbmp program (see the little tabs at the bottom of the page).

Using this program you can convert the CFS3 textures (.dds) into .bmp pictures.

Once you have the bitmap images (.bmp) you can then edit them with any painting program and then use the DXtbmp program to turn them back into .dds textures to be used by the game.

I use the following two programs for retexturing,
    paintshop
    photoshop

or for a free one google "the Gimp"

there are some pretty good tutorials floating around on the net, I'm sure there are some here on the SOH as well.

I'm sure others will chime in here with info as well.

    HTH's

    regards Rob.
