To All FSDS Modelers out there

Hello Folks, I am a beginner FSDS modeler with a desire to bring out many lesser know aircraft with VCs to the FS9 community. I am using FSDS 3.5.1 and trying to make good cockpit window cutouts. The Boolean cutting operation is really fickle for me. I try using Boolean with smaller parts and checking points and it does work uo tp a point. But I wonder that with some Russian airliners with a multiplicity of cockpit windows (e.g., IL-62), the Boolean could turn into a nightmare.

So here is my query: I am trying to make cockpit windows by polygonal manipulation. Seems to me that this method is somewhat painstaking, but it also seems to work. I want to know how do I add individual points to make new polygons. I already know about adding new points by splitting existing polygons. That is very beneficial, but I want to find a good way of making filler polygons, if my window turns out to be bigger that what it ought to be.

Jens Kristensen, I love your work. Do you have any pointers for me to make cockpits in FSDS?

Thank you evrybody for your responses.

Thank you for pointing me to the FSDS forum. But here is a weird question: since I can't find the "register" button; how in the world can one register on that forum?
    Thanks you,
    Sid

I tried, and it did not give me an option to register.

    Hi, Sid,

The way i normally at a new point is to make a new single polygon part (triangle) and merge it with the existing part.
Than move the points to the desired position and delete the points that are not needed.

Opps! I forgot, Felix Rodriguez (the Admin) has turned off registration through the buttons because of a recent serious spam attack. You must register by email to Felix. Look for any of his posts and click on his name on the left side. That will take you to a menu where you can email him directly.
I hang out there and also suggest http://www.fsdeveloper.com/ as another good source.

In FSDS 3.5.1, which I have , there is a button called Add Point, next to the ANI (animation) button. But, this Add point button seems like is always asleep. Does anybody know how to use the Add Point button in FSDS?
    Thanks,
    Sid

IIRC that button is used with the template mode?

to add a point, you need to select two points first then click the create point button. the new point will appear between the two selected points.

Doing windows by hand is very time consuming and results in much cleaner mesh. The boolean cut in FSDS is a bit messy. Many polys in weird places What I usually do to keep the poly count reasonable is copy the part I'm cutting and save it as a seperate part (mostly in case i screw it up) Then do the cut. Then the area where the cut parts were I'll select and split into another part. Then I'll reload the original part. delete the polys that match up with the part that's been boolean cut. join to part, snap to scale and pray.

If it works right you have the boolean section will now be a seamless join to the original part. (And if you did it wrong, you still cave the untouched copy saved.

Hi, Sid, The Add Point button is not operative in FSDSv3 and up. To add a point choose the two points between which you want to add and then make them current with the space bar. Hit Ctrl + A and a point will show up half way in between.

    Cheers, Paul

    Thank you

Thanks to all you replied on this thread. I tried your suggestions as was able to add points and make cockpit windows on the Cessna Citation in FSDS last night.
