So I am looking at either the GTX 970 or the R9 390 since they fit my budget. Anybody got experience with either one or both? Thanks

i7-4770K 4.4 Ghz - ASUS z87 PRO - Corsair H100i - 16 gig Kingston Beast DDR3 2166 Mhz - Gainward GTX 1070 GS GLH - CX 750M PSU - CoolerMaster HAF X case
I run the R9 290 card and love it..
BUT.. The newer 390, with 8 gigs onboard and a 512 Bit Interface will smoke mine. BTW.. Its the Interface that counts...Mine is 380, something...
This is a typical review of this card..
very efficient and elegant desgin, like it alot, its got alot of potential in terms of temps and overclocking.
-heard alot of review that this card beats the GTX 970 and is on par with a GTX 980
-no this is not a rebrand, its a refresh with a much higher clock, lower power usage, 2x more VRAM (which is a plus for 4K and mods), lower temps then its predecessor 290, and atleast 10-15 higher fps in games)
-directx 12 is gonna be a plus as well with amd stating that it may increase upwards to almost 80%, depending on what video card you have
I have been running the 970 for about six months and think it is great. Upgraded from 560i and it made a large difference in display.

In my little experience, nvidia cards go better with FSX and P3D. More possibilites in fine-tune.
Flavio - P3D v4.5 - MSFS 2020 - Win 11 Pro 64
i912900KF 5.2ghz - ASUS TUFZ690 - AIO Cooler Master PL360 Flux Masterliquid - 32gb Kingston Fury 3600mhz - Asus RTX 2080 Super - AGON 32'' AG323FCXE 165mhz - MCP 737R 2015 Virtual Avionics - SSDs M2 2Tb+1Tb XPG
GTX 970 here too, though I got it for other games. Nvidia goes better with DCS too.
Fine tune? No need with my card at all. FSX itself has only two tweaks. My drivers were installed, set up once, and thats it... I run locked at 35 and pretty much stay there unless the weather gets super bad... Then it can drop to the mid to high 20,s at times. But.. That's not the Vid card at work...
I am a bit confused to what PSU i need for the R9 390, so far I have read all sorts of wattage requirements.

87 Amps on a single rail will do it.
