No aircraft casts shadow on itself in V3

I should probably post this over at the LM forum, but if I select simobject casts shadow interior and exterior I lose the visual model of the aircraft, similarly if I enable cloud shadows on the ground the ground is not visible! only Autogen.

I have quite an old system but was hoping for at least FSX features to work! In FSX my interior and exterior shadows work perfectly well.

My graphics card is an ancient Nvidia GTX285 4095Mb total graphics RAM. I know my card can only do DX10 which might be the issue, but if I could at least get an aircraft shadow on the ground and self shadowing working I'd be a happy bunny. Cloud shadows on the ground are a nice to have, and I know that I'd need a new system in order to make full use.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    David.

I believe you found the issue with your video card being DX10 capable. Min system requirements state DX11 support.

Ah, shame that it's not more obvious that if you don't have a DX11 card that features from FSX are no longer able to work. I stupidly thought that they were building on all that FSX had to offer and that everything that went before would be present and that I wouldn't be able to see the newer features like the cloud shadows etc, but should've done more research and asked I guess!

    Doh!

What is a good graphics card with DX11 support that doesn't cost the earth? Not looking for high end just average?

That's a difficult question, regarding the cost.

In my opinion the most bang for the buck is delivered by a GTX970 type card. When I bought it some time ago it was a huge difference compared to the GTX660 I had previously used.

    Hi Mark

    Thanks for the pointer.

Does the GTX970 get acceptable frame rates, say rock solid at 20fps?

    david.

20 fps? Never seen it that low, honestly.
Mine is a Gainward Phantom 4GB version.

But remember, the card has to to work in harmony with the rest of the environment. A fast gfx card won't do much good in a otherwise slow system. What are the specs of the computer?

    Hi Mark,

My PC specs are Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, Intel Core i7 920@ 2.67 Ghz, 12 Gb RAM.

P3D V3 seems to work surprisingly well without the shadows, but I would prefer to see some of the new advanced features that P3D has to offer.

If anyone has any suggestions for a GTX 970 for the UK market that is quiet but good, please let me know as I'm lost with what company has a good one?!

I believe my current card is PCI-E, and hopefully my 850 Watt PSU can take the power needs of a faster card. Will check that.

    regards,

    David.

David, I think you don't have to worry with these specifications.

The Gainward Phantom is very quiet, which also was one of my objectives when I searched for a card. As far as speed goes, it seems like they are all pretty close to each other.

    Check this for an overview:
