    FS2004 Lockheed PV-2C Harpoon

Milton and team are busily beavering away (amongst other projects) at the FS2004 Lockheed PV-2C Harpoon and have just released a wip. I've altered glass and prop bmps to be more FsX friendly...

Hi Aharon, the airport is Bowerman (Wa) a freeware ORBX airport.

The VC is quite basic by FSX standards IMO but functional. It is still however a WIP.

The flight model was developed in FSX by Tom Falley (Fliger747), textures and sounds by Nigel Richards.

She has not been tweaked for FSX; this is the FS9 version.

These screen shots were taken in FSX.

Actually, I have a Vega Ventura PV-1 about ready for a WIP release; will be a few weeks.

The above is a full blown PV-2c. There is also a PV-2D model and a Fire Tanker model near completion.

Curious to know the differences or improvements from the original HarpWIP.

This in FSX. As I recall the only item that couldn't work was the compass.

Just curious, of course. And thanks again for the latest, Milton. I just downloaded and installed it and going to take a short hop.

What spawned this WIP release was Willy asking for a civilian version, so it simply has its interior stripped out and all armament.

There have only been minor, subtle changes to what is in this release (mapping, some parts) and is not meant to replace what you had.
It will run concurrent with it without interference.

I am still working to finish up the VC cockpit area.

The rear area that includes the areas for the radio oper, navigator, and radar operator are not included, are awaiting textures, as is much of the rest of the VC.
I am still working on switches and gauges, and textures may be a while yet.
So, this is for anyone who wishes to fly a plain vanilla civil type and maybe slap on some paint.
Although the paint kit is not released, the exterior mapping and textures are locked in now.

Hi, can you share the altered glass file? I ported over FSX prop disc from an old beach 18.

Was not a fan of this airplane when it was first released and probably wouldn't have downloaded even now except for this thread. P3D is all I have installed now so I understand the shortcomings with FS9 aircraft (no exterior shine, exterior darker (especially where metal is concerned)), prop and glass replacement, VC non-functional). I've accepted those and found workarounds for most. . .and I was curious enough to take a look at the Harpoon. Two things impressed me. . .one was the feeling of actually sitting "UP" in the cockpit, something that many aircraft developers are either unable or unwilling to master. The other was the sounds. . .just masterful. No one thing that I can point to but throughout the admittedly short flight I just finished it was the overall impression of realism. . .little creaks and sputters. . .tire noise on take off and landing, the sound of an engine at cruise and changes in sounds during turns and decent. Things that would make a long flight in the Harpoon rather enjoyable. . .so I'm gonna keep her. Nicely done!

This is a great flyer. Milton and team have done it again. Great work. Looking forward to the Ventura and some rough and weathered WWII USN paints for patrolling in the Pacific.
Striker, listen, and you listen close: flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.

It is interesting the photos that inspire me to action.

This is the photo that inspired me to do the PV-1 Vega Ventura.

Wait until you see the one that inspired the Harpoon :-)

Here are the two pics that inspired the C-57, C-60A, and L-18 Lodestar series. Still looking for the Harpoon pic.

The PV-1 Vega Ventura medium bomber (designated Ventura I) lead the way through a series of developments starting with the Model 37-21-01 based on the L-18 civilian Lodestar design (and looking like a large Hudson) and that led to the PV-2 Harpoon C and D models. Lockheed built the Ventura on contract from the British Purchasing Commission.

Changes in fuselage shape, longer, stronger differently shaped wings, larger tails, and beefier gear were the exterior visual changes between the Ventura and Harpoon.

There's lots on the internet about the chronology and history.

Dave, I think the easiest way to quickly spot the difference (depending on the photo angle), is to look for the tail extending past the fins. If no extension then it is a Poon. That's what I do anyways.

Here is a good profile comparison.

Note cockpit, tail, cowling/nacelle, and wing differences.
I built the Harpoon first; the Ventura was almost a complete redo because every major body part was different.

Funny, I'm sure that Ventura crew would have complaining they have to play dead duck to a Harvard/Texan
