I see your point but like most other sites you go to, I'll bet you get junk mail anyway.
I may get tons of junk mail in my mailbox too, correction, I already do. Oh well, If you were
to buy this, you'd have to go thru the same hoops. Just like is was when it was payware. They want to issue you
a license as if you paid for it. Only answer I can think of.
...because Google want to know everything about everyone. They have found that people will sign up for anything free and then they can use the data (check most smartphones for what is collected) to do a more perfect job of target advertising sales.
Having said that, I signed up (after all they already have most of my life with Android) because GEPro has some tools I wanted so it's a trade.

It is far more detailed and has more tools than the standard version. I didn't mind the registration as I am already registered with some of their services using a secondary email account.

Got it now - it kept all my old settings Using a secondary e-mail is the way to go.
