    Flight1 DRM versus Win8

    Hello guys,
Iīd ask if you can give some opinion about this topic:

Precisely at post #14 forward. Do you think itīs a valid point? I think itīs important to our hobby. Thanks a lot!

At least Flight1's King Air and the GTN units are working fine on my Win 8.1 system. Both addons are also officially Win 8 compatible. But I don't know if they use another, newer version of the F1 Wrapper for these addons.

That depends in what DRM security itens are checked when wrapping this addons. My point is that, what is denying the use of some addons in win8 is the f1 drm system and not the addon itself. I prove that using Milviz F15E for example (See post #14).
Imagine if the DRM system was updated and everything works on win8, including the mighty leveld767. It would be glorious

In any case, it is the responsibility of Flight1 to update their DRM package to work with Win8.x, not individual developers.

Very true. However, it's a moot point if the individual developers don't officially support Win8 either, which is certainly the case in a number of older products.

Without reading any more of the discussion at that other site, I'd add my two cents in to say that the arrival of FSX:SE should make Win8 support a priority for all developers. It represents a possible influx of people new to the hobby, and amongst those are a significant portion who simply use Steam to play games on current hardware with the OS it shipped with.

That was my final finding, but for some reason, some people find hard to understand that. But found your last post there very pertinent and true. Completely agree with you.
Anyway, lesson learned. F1 is history to me for now. Move on.....

A slight aside I have found with Flight 1 install .exe files. They are unresponsive if Malwarebytes is running. No idea if it is a foible of my system (W7 64) but over Xmas I was attempting to reinstall the Level D and Ultimate Traffic 2 with no joy. It was driving me nuts until purely by chance I had disabled MWB to free up some resources and the exes worked. There never was a warning or reason they wouldn't fire up they just sat there.
Anyway, it may be useful for someone in the future to know, for what it is worth.

Actually, it is not so much a matter of not "supporting Win8" as it is a case of "Win8 inhibiting" advanced flight sim products from running. Win8's increased "protection" scheme is far more intrusive and draconian than has previously been the case.

No developer can automatically configure the user's OS for them to remove those inhibitions. That remains the responsibility of the user, as has been the case all along.

Exactly. Thank you saying that. There are far too many variables to put it all on the developer/distributor to make it work.

That said, user's sharing what worked for them with others in these forums is a big help to all.

So may I ask...respectfully, any advice on W8.1 tweaks to allow certain aircraft to run successfully? I already have UAC deactivated, and disable antivirus while downloading and installing milviz products. The F-15E and F-4 I've purchased just give me nothing but lockups and sim crashes. I've tried to forget about them, but their sexiness just keeps chipping away at me late at night.......

The only aircraft I have not been able to run in Win8 are those that use a particular anti-piracy scheme. These are the ALS-SIM Flanker, the SkySim Mirage III/5 (both by Mark Harper), the Virtavia B-1B and CH-47 and maybe one more from Virtavia but I don't recall what now. These all use the same anti-piracy scheme and all worked in FSX with a key. Win8 is just too anal I guess.

Only the Flanker uses the Flight1 installer so that is not the issue here.

Flight 1 Product wise, my Ifly 737, 747 had no issue's with W8.1, nor the Milviz 737. They all unwrapped proper and installed nice and behaved with FSX/SE and W8.1. Want anal??, try Vista the MS lunatic system IMO. I find W8.1 Permissions easier to deal with and get way better performance. I consider my W8.1 on par with W7, just have to adjust a bit as usual with new OS.

Sorry mr Frank, but i respectfully disagree with you. Your affirmation is true but itīs not 100% true. F1 DRM is responsable for many addons donīt work in win8. The F15 is one of them. Other includes Eaglesoft addons, leveld767, f1 fokker100, etc... so the issue may be not f1 drm alone, but definetely is one of them. Where is the problem (in drm or win8) in fact is pure semantics. Itīs easy to say the problem is in win8 just because it implies that no correction can be done. Correction by the f1 drm developer, not the addon developer.
Will not go further in this debate because i proved my point in the other topic, but it seems that there is some resistence in the "other side" to debate that, imagine accept the arguments. So i rest my case on this in the hope that win10 make them work again or some divine intervention. Again, please understand my statement as a point of view. No harm intended

So? In nearly thirty years I can count the number of times I've called MS for "support" on less than one finger! That is, never...

There are still many years yet where critical updates will be made available.
