Down safe at OPKC, albeit somewhat delayed (see story below). And this was a pre-dawn landing in the dark, so with low visibility it was a good job that Karachi has an ILS (in fact it has two).

    A long time stationary mid-leg

On this flight I was unable to pay close attention to flight progress. My computer went into hibernation after 2 hours of not being used, about 2hrs 5 minutes into the flight. I didn't realise until about 45-50 minutes after it hibernated, so in effect I have been stationary for about that time. However, because it wasn't a true "pause", Duenna doesn't have two recorded times at which I was at precisely the same point. It does have two points only 9.88nm apart (calculated from the link below), separated by 48 minutes 28 seconds. So, what has happened, is that I was flying at 07:17:40, but at some time before 07:27:40 (the next 10-minute Duenna record) I stopped. Given that I moved 9.88nm, and was cruising at 277 knots GS, I'm estimating it was 2 mins 10 seconds later, at 07:19:50. Then at 08:06:08 I "unhibernated", and Duenna made another record, and then went back into its 10-minute recording pattern at 08:16, 08:26, etc. So in conclusion, I estimate I was stationary for just over 46 minutes.

Anyway, since I don't have the correct evidence to make a "paused" time claim, and it seems unwise to bother Miss Nellie () on the last official day of the race, I guess I'll just note this as a slow leg!

My computer is now set to "Never Hibernate".

And on a positive note, at least I've shaken off those headwinds!

    Leg 12: OPKC to OMAD

    Departing for OMAD.

Having got rid of the headwinds on the last leg, I've now got a 14 knot tailwaind heading across the Gulf of Oman.

Things aren't going well again. Had to abort and re-start, because I've exceeded the Hard Ceiling by 150 feet.

    Departing (again) for OMAD.

    Leg 14: OEHL to HEAX

Departing for Alexandria, HEAX. Need to stay out of Israeli airspace, so a slight diversion south is required, to cross from Saudi Arabia straight into Egypt.

1h 25 mins - strong 35 knot headwinds on the nose, so this leg is not going to be fast.

No luck today. Another complete PC lockup about 2.5 hours into the flight , so only the reset switch would recover it.

Will have to re-start the leg, departing HEAX.

Looks like I'm not quite going to get back to Mildenhall today. Two PC issues (a hibernate, and a lockup) have cost me a couple of hours, and pilot inattentiveness of the hard ceiling meant an abort that lost me over an hour as well.

Ah well, I'll fly the final leg tomorrow.

I've made it back to Europe, but not quite made it back to England yet. That'll have to wait till tomorrow. Hopefully I can still record a reasonable Handicap Race time, though these headwinds are brutal!

Good luck for your last leg/legs (two maybe required to get home?). That is quite some pace the King of Beeches is setting (261kts GS average so far!). Little sister Beech can only dream of such speed. See you at EGUN!

Thanks! Yes, two hops from here, and plenty of choice as to where the intermediate stop is (probably just this side of the Alps).

    Leg 16: LGST to LIPI

Departing now, and going as far as I can on the first hop, which means probably just short of the Alps. Initially aiming for LIPI, but let's see how the headwinds are...

1h 25 mins - 45 knots of headwind, though thankfully not right on the nose. Managing just 250 knots GS, so we won't make it to LIPI. Probably aiming for LJPZ now, but let's see how the next hour goes...

Well, the 45 knot headwinds relented, dropped to only 10 knots or so, and now are behind me. Range is looking much better, I can certainly get to Trieste (LIPQ), but I may just revert back to LIPI, and cross my fingers! From 17,000 this thing will glide at least 20nm anyway...

    Hey Martin,

I read you had quite the hurdles to overcome on this flight. But you are almost back in Mildenhall. Your determination reminds me of another pilot that participated in the LM race.

I radio'd in to the Mildenhall pilot's Launge to make sure you first cold beer is on me.

I am still in Essendon, relaxing and recovering from the race, while doing some interviews here and there.
It's amazing, the attention this race has gotten over here. All pilots and crew are treated as celebrities, on and off the airport.

Well have to go meet the Major for dinner. Have a great flight back home.
