Caught a slight break on the winds on the second half of the flight.
The visibility poor after take off and again for the last 30 or 40 minutes of the flight it went down to only 1 NM or so.
3000' is pushing it across some of the terrain to the North and East of the city ... exciting when you can't see.
What a great event .... thanks a bunch ... to Miss Nellie and the gang at 119!

Sorry about the belated message. Great run, congratulations, and thanks for sharing this adventure and bringing young Jimmy Melrose's accomplishments back to life so vividly! These pilots really were the "top guns" of their age, if not of all time, given what they had to do to pull it off, compared to all the "help" we have today.
While I was looking for a plane to fly ... wanted to keep it from the list of actual contestants ... I ran across the info for Melrose and was enamored at what he had accomplished at such a young age.
The accounting of his flying leading uop t the Great Race as well as that of his participation really was what "did me in".
That along with remembering being able to fly the model before it was released .... beta testing during the end of it's build by Milton and "The Guys" ... and how much fun it was to fly.
Actually a bunch of us ... that had finished our respective individual runs ... tag teamed it in the 2009 LM that SOH put on.
Very enjoyable .... I am grateful to be able to share what I found.
