Harriervs Yak-38
Publishedon June5, 2012,
- Since 1976, the Yak-38 ‘Forger’ has been Moscow’s equivalent of the famous Harrier, but uses three powerplants instead of the Harrier’s one for vectored-thrust performance. The vertical take-off jet was designed to spring from the decks of ‘Kiev’-class carriers to defend the Russian fleet from Western patrol aircraft and saw service on Russia’s last ‘Kiev’ carrier, Gorshkov.
The Yak-38 gave the Soviet navy experience with high-performance jets at sea, and was a useful stepping stone towards the fixed-wing naval fighters now coming into service with the Russian navy.
The Yak-38 could be seen all over the world as Soviet sea power expanded. The carrier Novorossiysk, based in Vladivostok, flew its ‘Forgers’ all over the Pacific.
The Yak-141 ‘Freestyle’ is the follow-on to the Yak-38, with advanced avionics and increased speed and range. It has not been produced in quantity, and needs a foreign buyer.
The ‘Forger-B’ is the two-seat trainer variant of the Yak-38. This was a much-needed aircraft as the standard Yak-38 was always a very tricky aircraft to learn to fly. The trainer aircraft lacks underwing pylons, radar or infrared systems, and is therefore not combat-capable.
The Yak-38 ‘Forger’ stirred excitement in the West when first seen aboard the Kiev in the Mediterranean. Using a main turbojet with twin rotating nozzles plus tandem lift jets behind its cockpit, the ‘Forger’ performed well in its specialised domain as a V/STOL (Vertical/Short Take-off and Landing) naval fighter.

Vivat Christus Rex! Ad maiorem Dei gloriam
The BAe Harrier referred to here is the GR5 variant generally the same as the Boeing (MD) Harrier II, a better comparison would be against the Naval Fighters FRS Mk1 and later FA2 versions that evolved from the Hawker GR Mk1/3 Harrier I line.
Interesting comparison.
It would also be interesting to see a comparison with the first generation Harrier that the Yak-38 would have been in response to.
Comparing it to a Harrier II is like comparing Mirage III specs with those of a Mirage 2000. They both have delta wings but ...
thanks for the replies!
right now, we're doing the interior model...
Nice!!! These are the kind of subjects that miss in FSX! Looking forward!
Looks great! The Yak-38 will work well with the FSX Kiev CVHG.

Any idea when it will be finished and released?
probably after new year.
I have found some liveries to add variety for this addon in the works.

Downloading now! Screenshots soon, and I predict it'll get a lot of use!
Thanks Harri and Hadi for this fine Russian aircraft! Quite a challenge to fly!
Intel i9-13900 Raptor Lake , Be Quiet! Dark rock slim cooler, 32 Gb Corsair DDR5 RAM, MSI Z790 Tomahawk motherboard, Asus RTX 4060Ti 16Gb, Thermaltake 1050 Watt PSU, Windows 11 64-bit 1 m2, 4 SSD, 2 HDD.
Is there a chance of a "sticky" for this with a change to the thread title of Yak-38 Released?
