    AVSIM Down (again)

Talk about bad luck... poor AVSIM can't seem to get a break...

Notice from Tom Allensworth sent to all staff 2:57 PM today:
    Folks,

We have had a hard drive fail. It happens that it is the principle (boot / system drive) for the forums. We are offline until we can get new hardware and get someone in there to fix it. It could be a while. This is not your normal hard drive. It is a RAID array and will require that we replace ALL six disks on that array. Please pass the word out to all the web sites you visit please. I will post a notice on FACEBOOK.

? That does not sound right. Replace all 6 disks because one went down. That sounds more like a cooling issue that killed all 6 drives or the whole raid.

Either way good luck to them.

I honestly don't know more than what Tom said. I do know that the system rack is only about six years old, and is housed in a secured, climate controlled facility in Reston, Virginia. At the time of installation, the entire cost was just under $100,000.

There was a time Avsim was always my go to site. Nowadays it is FS.com because Avsim is so slow. How about that for a turnaround. FS.com hasn't got any quicker either.

Of course the Library system is still on line and available, since it runs on a separate server entirely:

Thanks for the tip. As much as I love AVSIM, these ongoing issues seem to be slowly driving it into the ground.

It certainly looks that way. I really enjoyed all of those "unofficial support" forums.

It was hoped that the AVSIM forum server would be back on-line late this afternoon, but the latest word from Tom is that it probably won't be until Saturday afternoon...

Today we call into play our warranty and service assets and we will be receiving a new disk (Friday) and an engineer should have it installed by no later than mid-afternoon. We will then start to recover from our back up system and with any kind of luck, we will be back online by (Saturday) evening, EDT.

Also, I would like you to know that we are taking this opportunity to increase our storage capacity on that server by 50%. We will have more disks delivered next week, and they will be installed as soon as we can get HP Care Package folks on-site.

Why a RAID disc failure would cause the system to come offline will be looked into; the RAID array should have prevented that from happening. It didn’t.

We have an engineer there at the moment and are hoping to have the system back online today. Nothing has gone easy since this whole thing started. Tom will post a full story on it once we are back online.

Now this is a "Class Act" response! Way to go, Ickie! Hopefully Avsim won't need the offer and be back up today, but it certainly is a great way to conduct the SOH forum.

Ickie, that was a very generous offer. I'll suggest it to Tom as a possible future fallback position.
