Thread: RTWR 2014 Practice #2 "Longyear Express"

  1. #26
Brought a tear to my eye...

I remember my first leg in a practice.

I ran out of gas in the P-38 Lightning in Australia and had to ditch.

    On my second leg...

Well you can still see bits and pieces of that poor P-38 on the mountainside in Greenland.

Hey I did that too! Forgot to fill up the drop tanks. It sure gets quiet when the motors stop running (doh!) ...

I have the Baton. RPMR to RPLI in the Vertigo F9F Panther

  12. #37
Currently 450nm out, 53mins to go. Alt is 35,000, GS 527kts.

  13. #38
Now 127nm to go. Currently 60nm NE of Clark Int'l @ 20,000. 15mins to go.

  14. #39
Aborted Flight. Low fuel with just 70nm to go. Fuel gauge read 40%. Sucks after flying 700nm. Baton is back at RPMR. Note:Landing at Clark would cut approx. 200nm off the flight. JS

...and not required the aborted leg...

on the other hand, you could have been daring, throttled back a bit, stayed high and gone for a zero-throttle & possible dead-stick landing @ RPLI (and become one of the foolhardy heros of SOH)
    Just make sure you can manually lower the gear without power and control surfaces still work. (It IS a practice after all :}

That's plenty Martin as the Hornet makes a good glider with no power! Ask Dave!

I hold the record for that one I believe.

I ran our of gas 30nm from the airport and dead sticked it in.

Larry finished with maybe 2% fuel because he conserved it while I poured it on. We were battling 100 kt head winds coming into Israel.

Of course I was at 32,000 when I ran out.
