MJ's C-47 USAF Air Rescue Service

I've been following the the "re-development" thread for MJ's C-47 re-do on the "X" side. If you like the 47, or if you just like to see really good sim modeling and artistry, you should check out the the "X" forum for the development thread. Jankees, gman, TuFun and others have pulled out all the stops on this one!

After seeing Huub's KLM paint for MJ's "OLD" FS9 C-47, and gman's "Search and Rescue" gooney paint, it all kinda pushed me over the edge to give it a try!

    A couple of WIP shots:

Looks pretty good so far Duckie... I'm sure the finished product will be excellent as usual. I've been flopping around in MJ's C-47 Long Nose so maybe I'll have to press the ol' Gooney back into service for this paint. :salute:

I'm starting to really like this bird "again". Actually had a few crew training flights in the late 60's in the flying classroom C-47 at Ft. Huachuca. It had a SLAR boom fitted under the port side fuselage just under the cockpit, IR and camera systems all rigged for OV-1 T.O. crew training. It was affectionately referred to as the Vomit Comet! IIRCC it had 6, or maybe 8, student crew positions for the various systems.

But I digress! Tufun has worked his engine start up majic and some of the paints being created for it have a very high WOW faxtor! Just wish some of the effects, like the engine start up, would work in "my" sim! :mixedsmi:

    More later...

Nice repaint Duckie! Manfred's C-47 is a great (external) model and reasonably easy to repaint. So keep them coming!

    Cheers,

All these mods, upgrades, paints etc are for FSX or FS9? Both maybe? Bit confused here since you are posting this in the FS2004 forum.

Hey Moses03, this one is perfectly at home where it is shown! Seriously, it is for the FS9 version released by MJ for FS9 in 2011.

Thanks Huub. 1st time I've taken a serious look at the texture files and you started this with your latest KLM bird!

    Glad you (and I) did!

Normally I do my C-47 textures both for FSX and FS2004. Its a different resolution, but the same lay-out. Only the alpha channels need to be adjusted. YOu can find both version in the library here.

    More WIP screens...

Paint and markings are done. Now for some weathering, paint chipping, and then on to the alpha textures.

I'm glad took that look! Your repaint is getting better and better! It is an interesting livery, what is the story behind it?

Thanks Huub. This repaint is of one of the first generation of aircarft, a C-47 still in it's WWII US Army Air Corp war paint, assigned and used by the newly formed Air Rescue Service under command of the Air Transport Command in 1946. A short time later, as part of the global reorganization of the US Army Air Force into its own separate branch, the US Air Force, Air Transport Command became the Military Air Transport Service (MATS). By the time of the Korean War the major workhorse for rescue missions became the helicopter.

The ARS initially provided rescue assistance to all branches of service within the continental US, but by 1949 the ARS had grown to cover all US military transport routes world wide and detachments were stationed at all major USAF air bases. The ARS also provided world wide humanitarian relief and rescue operations in times of natural disaster.

The ARS was disestablished in the early 1990s at the time of another major reorganization which saw the disestablishment of its parent command, the Military Airlift Command (formerly MATS), and the USAF refocussed the former ARS mission to combat rescue operations. Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) and Personnel Recovery (PR) are now the primary focus of various smaller sub-commands throughout the global forces structure.

Gorgeous airplane, Dickie! Looks like I'm adding one more to the Hangar!

By the by... anybody notice the low Oil Pressure with this Model? I have another version created by Bitzer/ Beaumont with the Panel by Norm Hancock, and with that one the Oil Pressure is definitely higher as you ramp up the MP (90PSI +), whereas with MJ's, the Oil Pressure stays at 60 PSI no matter what the MP reads, just like the Default!

I wonder if I can get MJ's Model files to work with the B/B FDE? Better call Igor and have him get the operating table ready... :isadizzy:

Sorry I'm a day or 2 (?) past what I said, but...I finally found, after hours and hours of searching, a very good photograph of the aircraft I'm painting, SN 43-51012. I had to go back and correct a couple of glaring errors made by having only artists renderings if the specific bird. Although there were several areas addressed, the 3 main ones were: 1. the length down the fuselage of the yellow band was significantly shortened; 2. the large yellow buz numbers repositioned to align parallel with the fuselage center line rather than with the gound; and last but most time consuming were the engine cowles were unpainted metal with anti-glare panels on the fuselage facing surfaces, and from the appearance in the photo it looks this was due to fairly recent engine changes or upgrades.

Anyway, it's done and below are a few screens of the latest (and final) modifications of the paint (for me anyway!).

I will try to have it uploaded by tonight or tomorrow at the latest.
