    Mas San Launches the Fuso

Mas San has uploaded a beautiful model of the IJN Battleship Fuso. As usual the FR's are good and the detail great!

    Fuso

Thanks for the heads up Watchdog. I haven't been to Mas' site for some time. It's good to have the link again as well as this new CFS 2 version of the UJN Fuso.

The Fuso's sister ship was the Yamashiro. Both BBs were sunk at the battle of Surigao Strait.

    Jagd,

That battle, though decisive, was a massive show of Halsey's ego.

Had he followed good sound doctrine, the USN would have sunk the vast majority of the Japanese Navy's greatest ships.

I cannot imagine Adm Nimitz's frustration when he finally told Halsey to turn south and get into the fight, though too late.

With all of the blunders made by our military in WWII, it is a wonder we prevailed.

The End of the Fuso Class BBs

While only the southern part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Admiral Oldendorf's Seventh Fleet Support Force of old Pre-WWII BBs, with several Pearl Harbor veterans, was well placed to intercept the two southern prongs of the Southern Force (Nishimura-Shima) of the IJN's assault through the Surigau Strait. It was the final fleet action of BBs v. BBs and was a sterling example of the much talked about and practiced tactic of capping the enemy's "T."

Only a handful of sailors from the Fuso and Yamashiro, survived the battle. Many of those that made it to shore, were dispatched by a vengeful Filipino population on the surrounding Islands.

Say Jagd, where did you find that action map? I downloaded your pic as posted but its in a small size that loses print definition when resized larger. I sure could use this one in my PTO war maps archive.

I've always admired Oldendorf's actions in this engagement as a prime example of what following orders in a well-designed game plan can do. Textbook stuff...right place, right time, right formations and perfect tactics...unlike Halsey, chasing waterfalls.
