HMS Bounty Tallship has been lost off NC...

Sad to report that Tallship HMS Bounty has been lost off the coast of Cape Hatteras, NC in high seas behind Hurricane Sandy. The US Coast Guard has rescued 14 of 16 crew members. Among the two missing is the Captain. R.I.P.....

Two people lost, Coast Guard crews risk their own safety while conducting rescue ops. That ship should not have been anywhere near Hatteras during hurricane conditions. How dumb can ya get.

I agree... shouldn't have been anywhere near there.

What actually happened was that they set sail out of Connecticut enroute to St Petersburg, Fla before this storm was even in the Atlantic and also the prediction models weren't up to speed yet. When Sandy blew up in the Southern Caribbean and marched towards Jamaica then Cuba, it accelerated in forward speed very quickly in the jump up to the Atlantic. The crew of the Bounty were in touch with the Hurricane Center and the USCG the whole time as well as other vessels. They made their way East around and behind the storm but the seas were high in that direction due to the second storm East of Bermuda. They started making their way closer to the coast overnight and today after Sandy passed but began taking on water after losing one of their generators and not long after, total power and propulsion. The winds were 40mph with 18ft seas.

You guys that have sailed through Cape Hatteras waters know the history of it and how suddenly vicious it can become. I've been out there twice on moderately rough seas with white caps everywhere which was bad enough. From all said, it appears that this ship & very experienced crew ended up at the wrong place & wrong time and old man Murphy reared his ugly head into the mix.

It's a sad loss of life and there will be plenty of finger pointing and blame-storming. I think the long and short of it is that they set sail under good conditions, conditions changed, they took the best possible course of action, but a mechanical failure was their undoing. Some things are just unpredictable.

This Weather Pattern was weeks in the making..Predictions were dire....There are cruse ships getting whacked also..they too knew that the NE was to get a major storm....It would seem logical to set one course with this in mind..or like planes do...stay in port, get people off... not the time to blame anyone. Sadly people died.
Which brings me to the original captain of the BOUNTY Captain Bligh!....What would he have done?..Yes he was a tough kick ass captain, but expert in navagition, and experance. As the story tells us ,after being set a drift,he navigated home to Honor and fame, while those mutineers rotted in the jungle....Better yet Marlin brando..Its said the BOUNTY became his love boat...So sorry this replica its now in Daveys Jones Locker now,can always reproduce another.but Those lost lives? Gone forever, and now part of the mystic of the HMS BOUNTY!

I walked the decks of that ship years ago. What a shame for the loss of the vessel and an even greater one for the loss of Captain and crew

The local news that I watch is the main TV station for the Bounty's winter home in St. Pete, where she was heading back too.

They just had an in-depth report on the incident and at the end made a surprising statement that they can't leave the ship where it is, because it poses a navigation hazard.

They were implying that some sort of salvage type operation would have to be looked into.

Don't know what to make of that, other then it is interesting.

The Bounty replica began to sink when it's pump system failed.

The original Bounty's pump system was manually driven. Two and four man crews? I'd wager the original ship/original crew might have come off okay.

Minus the steroids, antibiotics, computers and satelite tracking systems....we're nowhere as tough or as skilled in hands-on arts as our ancestors were.

Claudine Christian, the crew member who could not be revived, had apparently been established as a descendant of Fletcher Christian...

    Milton,
I haven't installed any of these, yet, but there are quite a few over at Flightsim.com. Search for "Pierre de Rotalier". Ron Jeffers and Mike Hill also have some. Here is an AI pack assembled by David "OPA" Marshall listed there.

FS2004 Scenery--AI Tall Ships Sailing On Long Island Sound NY. A gathering of ten vintage AI sailing ships near Fisher's Island, New York. This scenery features incredibly detailed AI sailing ships modeled by Ron Jeffers, Pierre de Rotalier and Mike Hill. The project includes a replica of the Pequod - Captain Ahab's whaling ship in the epic novel "Moby Dick". Eight of the ten ships make twice daily trips around Fisher's Island. There is also an animated naval rowboat which makes short demonstration runs daily. With one exception, all required files are included. This scenery has been tested with Ultimate Terrain and the FS2004 default environment. This package works very well with John B.Loney's Elizabeth Airport (0B8_V1.ZIP). Compiled for your flying (and sailing) enjoyment by David "Opa" Marshall.
