Book that I am currently reading:-
The Shetland Bus by David Howarth - The Lyons Press 2001, originally published by Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd London 1951
A great book about the early carrier battles is "Black Shoe Admiral", fascinating information about the obstacles that Frank Jack Fletcher ( a medal of honor recipient in an earlier war) faced and how well he really did in a complex situation with few resources.
Life ain't simple once you get past 16, And this about the best example I can think of.
All told, its not the best written book I've ever read, but it is an in-depth and frankly fascinating look at the Japanese Merchant Marine in the later stages of WWII. Lots of detailed vessel schematics as well.
