Oops, just spotted another rules issue - I should be back on dead-reckoning again for this Congo section, but I mistakenly used NDBs for the last leg FZAB to FZGA. Less haste, more speed!

I'll go back to FZAB and re-fly it by dead reckoning.

A quick response from Miss Nellie, only after a bemused smile. "Goodness gracious! Happily, the young man caught his error right away. He is doing the right thing."

Down safe at FZGA (again) after flying it DR and following the river. Ironically this re-fly was 13 seconds faster, despite being somewhat further, but I'll leave my original time since I shouldn't be getting an advantage from having to re-fly it. :isadizzy:

Note to self: read the rules!! (again)

Safely down at KZIA. It's a bit darker than I was expecting - the sun set 20 minutes ago - but thankfully Stanleyville has a lit runway and VASI, so no problems.

An hour into the flight, and I've had nice tailwinds at 7,000 feet so far. Just approaching the border with Uganda, and I can see the tall peaks of the Ruwenzori Mountains ahead. On checking the map, I've noticed that these are actually a lot higher than I really want to fly, so I'm diverting slightly to the south, to pass Lake Edward and over Lake George, before continuing east to Lake Victoria.

It's nice to fly down here and explore the mountainous African terrain - something new to me.

I'm going on vacation for a week now, so I won't be finishing the trip (two more legs) until next weekend. Thanks for extending the completion date... I can still make it.

A week later, and it's time to finish this great trip. Departing now for Jo'burg (FAGM).

Edit: control yoke issue on first take off run - re-started flight and duenna.

Just left FAGM. Weather was beautiful there, not a cloud in the sky. Lets hope it stays that way until you get there!

Thanks Paul - well, there were a few clouds, but also plenty of blue sky and calm winds. Safely down at FAGM.

One more leg and you're in, watch out for the cross wind from the w-nw.

Thanks for the warning OPF, I'll watch out for that when I'm down there.

Departing now for the finish, FAYP. For the precision flight on this leg I'll estimate 3:28:00.

I found Carnavon out in the high plataeu of the Northern Cape, and crossed FACN at 2:07 into the flight. Wolseley NDB has popped up about 10 degrees off to my right (I've drifted slightly due to those strong NW cross-winds), so that's my final course correction. On schedule for arrival in Cape Town at about 3:25.

Down at FAYP, but I broke the gear on touch-down, trying to force a landing. Grrr!

Never mind, I'll take the 1 hour penalty, get out alive, and head for the bar... :isadizzy:

Enjoyed the flight, and really enjoyed the event - thanks to the organising team!

Great run, Martin. Navigation, perseverance, airmanship, and speed.

You have really mastered the Percival. Pretty soon, at the bar we'll be talking about Martin's Mew! Until Gunter arrives in town...
