    "Raiden"

I've been privileged enough to be beta testing the ChiChi Jima scenery in the works, by Mark Schimmer and Tom Stovall, and its been a perfect opportunity to re-familiarize myself with Tim Conrad's "Raiden". I hope you enjoy the screenshots!

    Thassa purty airplane.
Basic Flying Rules: "Try to stay in the middle of the air. Do not go near the edges of it. The edges of the air can be recognized by the appearance of ground, buildings, sea, trees and interstellar space. It is much more difficult to fly there."

Who's paint scheme is that? Very nice!

Hi Dave, the repaint is one of several made by Mike Barnes, available at flightsim.com. If you search Raiden and Mark Barnes you should see two packs of repaints.

    John,

Just out of curiosity, what kind of video board are you using? Your pic's are so vivid and clear. I'm using ATI Radeon 4800 series.

BTW, When do you think Chichi Jima will be released?

Rich, for the release of ChiChi Jima, it sounds like it may be within just days. I have not experienced a single issue with the scenery, with everything checking out just great.

The vid-card I have is an Nvidia N560GTX-Ti "Twin Frozr II" card by MSI, which was part of the upgrades I did around this time last year. I had always heard about the greatness of Nvidia cards through Nick Churchill (the "Screenshot Artist"), and its been a great experience with the card. It does require a powerful-enough CPU to be able to run it - when I first had it, my CPU was way out of date, and it caused the CPU to over-heat. My current CPU is an Intel i5-2500 running at stock 3.30 GHz. Check Ralphs Ad and Fry's Ad. Great visuals and amazing performance.

One more question? What do you recommend for a better sound for the Raiden? That DC3 sound is not so hot.

    Thanks......

It's hard to know for sure what it would sound like, since there aren't any originals of the engines currently operational (as far as I know). It was powered by a 14-cylinder two-row engine, producing 1,820 hp. This is very close to an R-2600 engine. Although I haven't tried it yet, I was thinking of using the sounds from the MAAM-sim TBF/TBM Avenger. Also up for consideration might be an R-2800 soundset, one of my favorites being from the AF/A2A Corsair.

John, I love the Raiden, before the just flight A6M2 from Aeroplane Heaven came out I flew it with the Chi-Chi Jima scenery all the time. Still love the aircraft. Off to get the new repaints by Mark Barnes.

Just a heads up for you beta testers, really glad you found no issues. Mark and I have found a couple that you couldn't have noticed. They are corrected. I was not happy with the base at Torishima or the naval facility at Ha-Ha Shima. Both of those bases have been upgraded and I feel they look the way they should now.

If all goes as expected we should have Chi-Chi Jima 1945 out by Friday.

Thanks John for all the great screen shots.
    Regards, Tom Stovall KRDD

I am guessing that this plane is payware. Sure looks great.

To your suprise, it is freeware from the great Tim "Piglet" Conrad. Matter of fact, it is in the warbirds library amigo!

John, I've sent you a PM concerning the photoreal shorelines!

Great pictures, and a wonderful airplane by Tim.

    Best,

I feel horrible, as I didn't have the coastlines properly installed when I took the above screenshots, so it doesn't show Mark's work to its fullest. Here are some screenshots I had to take, showing the coastlines installed - they really cap-off the brilliant look of the islands.

That certainly shows the shorelines correctly. Installation can be a bit of a challenge. Mark has written some very good instructions on how to do this. If people have questions we are here to help. The coastline change is well worthwhile as John shows here.

I did some research and found out that the Mitsubshi Raiden translates to "Thunderbolt" and the allied name for it was "Jack".
It was designed by the same guy that designed the A6M, Jiro Horikishi.
It was to be a strictly local-defense intercepor, primarily designed to defend against the B-29 Superfortress.

Speaking of the Raiden... Does anybody have any "updates" to the flight dynamics? No offense to Mr. Conrad, but I find this plane really hard to fly because it is very twitchy (it also stalls and spins really easily).

    Thanks!
