2012 Cape-to-Cape Moses Golden Age Italian

Let's get this race going. ENHF to ENVA in the FIAT G.18V.

Will be using default MS real-world weather throughout.

Down safe at ENVA. Good to have that first flight in the books. Had wanted to try for Stockholm but it was just too distant to log a decent time.

Plenty of NDB's this leg. Weather was optimal save for one rogue thunderstorm off to port. Got a screenie of the massive thunderhead towering above the FIAT.

Note: Spotted a shiny Lockheed twin parked on the ramp as we rolled in.

Pointing the ship in the direction of Copenhagen. ENVA to EKCH.

  4. #4
Made it in time for lunch. Thankfully the weather held.

Onward to Prague, EKCH to LKKB.

  6. #6
Made it to Prague. Weather fogged up near the end which made it tough to spot the field. Had to double back a bit.

Watch out for those muddy areas just off the tarmac...

Looks like you're stuck in the mud. Need a tow truck, mayhap.

First mud, now snow. Saddling up for Bolzano, LKBB to LIPB.

  9. #9
Down safe in Bolzano. Was nervous starting out as we were snowed in with no visibility. By the time we rounded the Salzburg NDB, the weather cleared up and it turned into a beautiful flight over the Alps. We flew south of the track to pick up the giant valley which led right into the airport without having to dive down in a panic at the end.

15 minute hand-flying bonus and 2 hour full stop bonus captured this leg.

This one is for you Damian.

Good show Moses! Looks like you found the same valley I did. I was actually trying to hit the larger one to the west though.

Yep, hard not to think of Damian when you're in Bolzano.

    Thanks Willy.

Hand-flying from LIPB to LSMI. Weather looks good to start.

  12. #12
Arrived at LSMI. Had almost drifted too far south to spot LSPM as our 2nd waypoint but caught it way off to starboard in time for a proper course correction. Glad to have this leg safely tucked away!

    30 minute hand-flying/not busting 12,000' bonus.

Well done, Moses. Your story is similar to mine, but you weren't quite as lost as I was!

    Thanks P. Departing for LFML.

  15. #15
Arrived in windy LFML and plenty of severe wind shifts through the mountains. Good to see the Alps fade into the distance.

    15 minute hand-flying bonus.

Departing for the Dark Continent, LFML to DAAG.

  17. #17
Down in Algeria, but not so safe. Overstressed the FIAT while bouncing down the runway at DAAG. My fault completely as I got a little impatient and thought that landing with a 7-9 knt tailwind would be doable. Wrong! (She can be somewhat delicate on the ground).

Will stay here a day or two to check out and repair the gear. Hopefully nothing that a little camel spit can't fix.

1:00hr crash penalty assed this leg.

The Camel spit should hold until you get to the checkpoint at Bechar. (reckon that's where you are headed?)

Check in and ask for a guy named Omar ... he'll tell you where I left a half case of duck tape.

Now that will hold ya till the end ...

Good show Moses ... Good luck!

Good news. We can pay them now, as per the agreement. The Black Beech is off to an undisclosed location in the desert, to balance the check book, as it were...

The cool blue of the Med is long ago and far away. Rolled to a stop in dusty Bechar, DAOR.

No rest for the weary. After a quick refuel and a splash of coffee, it's off to DAUA and further into the desert...gulp.

  25. #25
Safe at DAUA. First half of the flight was uneventful but then a sandstorm rolled in which made it hard to see much above 8000' or so. We overshot the airport a little but landed okay.
