    A big NAY here!!!

My tutorial "New ways to have fun with CFS1" has lost all but two of its attachments!

    A bit frustrating...

I will go post where you say, but what good will it do?
Torture numbers and they'll say anything.

    i heartily agree.
    hopefully, according to Milton,
    the problem will be fixed.
    we shall see.

I think all of my attachments are gone. The AF99 Tutorial doesn't really have any serious value without them.... I just went back to check on that thread.

My understanding is: The attachments data lost their "connections" to the database and the indices cannot be recovered apparently. vBB doesn't seem to handle more than 75Gigs of data well.

All we can do at this point is focus forward.

    to see if they are there or not;
click settings, scroll down and click attachments.

Ivan, did you post at the above link?

    from what i can see,
no one in the cfs forum has attachments.

    i see that Milton posted
at the same time i was.
many thanks for your efforts, Milton.
i'm sure we will all move forward,
    what else can we do?

at this point, my main concern,
    are the possible repercussions
for stating my mind on the subject.

    Ivan and hubba,
i am so sorry that all your work is for not.
and that, like in the old days,
    i did not make copies.

    obviously, what we have here
    is another instance where backups
should be the order of the day.
i should have learned my lesson
    from my experiences with ad2k.

so much for the false impression of stability.
i should know better and frankly,
i am very irritated with myself.
    it's not that my attachments
    were all that special.
    they are not.
    besides, i still have them.
i just hate to see things go down the tube.
especially, for those that are trying
    to help and educate others.
it just seems such a waste of time and effort.

    other than that,
    all i can say is,

    HUMPH

    Thoughts for the Future

I am sure Hubbabubba is thinking pretty much the same thing.
This is version 2 of the "Lost all the Attachments" game.
It isn't very encouraging to spend a whole lot of effort to generate attachments when they go away so easily.
For me, First was the Paint Tutorial. Second was the AF99 Tutorial.

I am sure I have all the images from both, but for the AF99 Tutorial, it ran several months, I did NOT organize the images and they lived on several Flash Drives.

    Pardon the rant.

    call that a rant?

i don't think you need to apologize
    for voicing your complaint.
    you did nothing wrong.
    except maybe in thinking
    that your work was secure.

i think we all have learned
    another valuable lesson.

    the question is,
how many times do we need
to be kicked in the crotch
before we finally realize that it hurts.
and we should take preventive measures
and either, move or put on a cup?
(of course, this analogy is predicated
on the assumption that we don't like
    being kicked in the crotch.)

    nothing is eternal.
especially here in the virtual world.
if we want to retain something,
we need to do it ourselves.

    along those lines,
    a thought comes to mind.
    what if tutorials were created
    in, say, pdf format,
    organized by the author,
    then uploaded when completed.
    installments, could be posted here
    as the project progresses.
but the whole package would remain
in the author's possession for safe keeping.

i realize that this will entail
more work on the author's part.
    but in the long run,
it should save a heck of a lot
of aggravation and feelings of helplessness.

    it seems to me,
that we should come to terms
with the facts of virtual life.
    this kind of thing happens
more often than we care to admit
and we have no control over it.
we can feel bad about it
and do our fair share of complaining.
that is normal and, imho, acceptable.
BUT, in the long run, we need to learn
that it is up to us to cover our bases.

    sh*t happens,
    so plant flowers.

    there....that's a rant
    sometimes the magic works.
    sometimes it doesn't.

    More work, you say?

It will exactly double our work load; one version in PDF and one in HTML, and I'm not counting the first draft version that I, fortunately, kept.

What the heck, for what it's worth, I will just do that and keep my mouth shut...:angryfir:

I don't want to give you a gardening lesson, smilo, but if you plant flowers and then get sh*t, you will only get very stinky flowers...

    HTML versus PDF

The thing about doing one of these tutorials in installments is that there is some immediate gratification and if there is an audience, they can follow along as things happen. If it is all presented in a single PDF, I think folks would lose track or lose interest pretty quickly.

I can obviously recover all the text that was posted. I can either find or reproduce all of the screenshots. I am also not going to spend the hour or two a day over a couple months to redo this. It cost too much the first time. Anna Honey and the kids definitely did not like the time I was spending on it.

Is this really a "Gone" thing or just "It may take a while" thing?

    valid points, all.
doing it in pdf was just a format example.
it doesn't really matter how your work is saved,
what's important is that it's saved
    in it's entirety, illustrations included.

i just dug through some old harddrives
and found hubba's "sizing it up" tutorial.
i have jpg and bmp pictures,
    rtf text documents in which
    the illustrations are poor.
and coolest of all, three mht files,
which go to the original june, 2006
    soh forum pages, including illustrations.
    very cool.
this is rather odd, since those pages no longer exist,
    but i'll take it.
    also, they are explorer files,
which i no long use, since i went to firefox.

frankly, i don't know how i did it
and am amazed that i still have them.
i'm not sure if i could do it again,
    but it's worth a shot.
as i see it, this kind of thing needs to be done
early and often and stored in multiple locations.

Ivan, i don't know the answer.
    from what i've gathered,
    the loss is permanent,
but i hope i am wrong.

    hubba, i was thinking that,
in time, the **it turns to fertilizer.
    unfortunately, for now,
all we have left is it.

    edit;
just ran a test on another machine
that runs an older version of explorer.
    pages can be "saved as"
    Web Archive, single file(*.mht) files.
    this may not be perfect,
    but it's better than nothin'

    next question;
can you guys go back and edit
    your older posts?
    i'm not sure you can.
    let me know, please.

    I understood your allegory, smilo.

Mine was that spreading manure is usually done before the growing, not after.

In long; nooooooooooooooooo! (Sorry, couldn't resist)

It always is a good idea to have a plan B, when you need plans C, D, E, & F ......, things are starting to get interesting.

When those who are trying to do their best and it's onto about plan K or L they also need some backup and support or the whole ship could end up going down. Failure by everyone to provide support and backup to the original support/backup crew can have the original crew burn out. Been there done that - not a pretty place. Providing support is cheaper and less painful in the long term, but can have a few hiccups in the short term.

    Hello Seagull V,

You presume that it is just a question of willingness to fix things. I for one don't always save the images I post on here. I probably can re generate them, but not without a LOT of difficulty. Even stuff like the screenshots I posted for the Corsair thread (as simple as they were) would be difficult to reproduce exactly. Note that all of the original images were JPG file with the word "small" appended before the extension. Some of these files (most in fact) are GIMP files with just a "small" JPG generated to post here. Most of them were never saved.

Something like the old AF99 Tutorial took months to post and I don't even know where to find the images I used.

We are also NOT administrators here. I simply CAN'T go back and edit a post from months ago.

Why is it that CFS1 attachments are all gone yet other simulators' forums seem to have survived intact?
