    2012 Cape-to-Cape Official Rules Release

    Friends,

Attached is the Release version of the Cape-to-Cape Cup.

This is an event something like the 2009 London-Melbourne Race. Golden Age pilots fly from Europe's North Cape to Africa's Cape of Good Hope in 1930s vintage aircraft using primitive navigation abilities. They follow a route through the Alps, over the Sahara, along the Congo, and then the highlands and savannahs of British East Africa. This part of the event recreates the atmosphere of Golden Age intercontinental flight. Modern Era pilots fly a reverse course from South to North using contemporary aircraft and modern navigation techniques. The challenge here is not only speed but precision as well. You may fly in either or both aviation eras.

This is meant to be a fun excercise in flight simulation where pilots get to enjoy the challenge in a friendly and only mildly competitive atmosphere. It is scheduled for April 7-May 14. You may fly whenever you like, fitting your legs into your own schedule.

You will find the event's description and rules as well as a FAQ. The release version is mainly the same as the earlier public draft with a Table of Contents and some rewriting for clarification.

    Changes from "pre-release" draft.

    • Active Sky is now allowed. If you want to fly with the Active Sky weather engine, you must declare that usage before your first flight and then stick with it throughout the race. No switching back and forth. Please do fly Active Sky if you like.
    • Appendix C is expanded. It includes the summary of requirements, bonuses and penalties. New is a short "Rules to Fly By" that summarizes the constraints. And the appendix now includes a sample routing for both the Golden Age race and the Modern Era race. The Guide in Appendix D explains the strategy.
    • The requirement for an intermediate stop between several selected checkpoints is now more clearly explained.
    • The Precision Race declared time rule is slightly modified. Pilots may declare any "target time" that makes sense for their own flying style.
    • In the Modern Era, a "champion flyer of 2012" is awarded to the pilot with the best combined rank ordering in the two races.
    • The "Reference Time" for each aircraft is now included in Appendix A.

Also included in this release are some unofficial data showing the aircraft maximum tested speeds (at optimal legal altitude) and ranges where available.

Again, if you want to fly an aircraft that is not on Appendix A's White List, please let us know and we'll gladly try to accommodate your interests.

We hope that you enjoy this event.

    Best,

    The Spring Event Team
Paul Beaudoin, Jim Doner, Mike MacKuen,
    Willy McCoy, and Kevin Moore

Good job Moses. I just came here to do that myself.

Just a friendly reminder to select the cape event in your Duenna, prior to starting your first flight.

    In the rules it says:

"The Duenna program will be used to track and authenticate flights throughout the event. Please enable online tracking and indicate the event as: "2012 Cape to Cape Challenge"."

The event listed in the Duenna is slightly different. (Not sure how Miss Nellie let that one slip by):

    Thanks,
    Moses

It looks like the cape event is listed twice under the Duenna:

    "2012 cape to cape challenge"

    "soh cape to cape"

As long as you pick one of them. Thanks.
