Have you opened up the case and blown out all the heatsinks lately? If not that would be worth looking at. It's amazing how loaded up with stuff those things can get! :isadizzy:

And check your ATI drivers. I had a lot of issues with my 6770 hd after 11.9 thru 11.11 updated to 11.12 and I am having less goof ups with this one.
In fact I don't thik I will be updating drivers again for a while.
Card was blown out of dust, running 11.12 drivers
I run nVidia cards and have had the same symptoms. Generally speaking, I'd say it's driver related, because once I reverted back to a previous version, those symptoms went away. When FSX first started reacting that way, the spikes resulted off of the autogen within the scenery. The busier the scenery in the area, the worse the spikes. Something you could try is defrag FSX, and/or the drive it resides on. Also, reduce your settings to see if the symptoms subside.
Often times I think situations like these are caused from badly compiled models within.
Have you tweaked your bufferpools setting in the config file? If that setting is to high for the graphics card to handle it can cause spikes like that. If so try seting it to a lower value.
Check this thread over at avsim for a discussion about spikes: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/346291-autogen-spikes/
