I remember a thread a year or so ago about making the default gps sharper and clearer I did it then but now after a crash and reinstall I can't remember how I did it.I did a search of our forums here and came up empty handed.Anyone remember it?

This should do it.

I don't remember anything about making it clearer but there was a thread a while back about adding terrain shadows to the display and also adding a 'traffic display' so that AI or MP aircraft (when on a direct connection) show up on the GPS.
Is that what you were thinking of?
It does require you to edit an XML document but the instructions are very clear and it is very easy to do. It also works in FS9 too for those interested.
The instructions for the ground shadows can be found here:

Both mods were discovered/created by Bill Leaming and add code that MS apparently left out for some reason.
