The last of the Hungarian 21'

The Hungarian Air Force flew the Mig-21 for 40 years, retiring them in 2000. For the last years the remaining Mig-21Bis and UMs were based with the 47. Fighter Regiment/Wing at Papa AB.

Colonel Jozsef Lanecker made the lastever Hungarian Mig-21 flight on the 31 August 2000, flying his personal "Red 5531". The aircraft had the standard 47^thwing decals with the large wing badge and numbers on the tail and the badge of the Griff squadron on the nose. The aircraft was also decorated with Laneckers name under the canopy and his colonel stars on the fuselage. As seen on most of Papa's 21 during the 1990's, there was also a Fortis watch ad just behind the tactical red code.

The base itself itself closed shortly after the 21's were retired, but it got a new lease of life as base for the NATO C-17 fleet in 2009. Most of the Migs are still at Papa, slowly rusting away.

Jozsef Lanecker sadly died in a JAK-52 crash in 2003.



Ivan Jurcaga's beautiful Mig-21MF model has become a firm favorite (I was a bit late with discovering it..) and I think the MF model is more than close enough to justify a Bis paint

Debrecen sure is a nice scenery and is an old mig fighter base, make sure you get the Hungarian landmarks as well from the same developer.

? Not sure what you think about. If you are talking about that the original model is a mig-21mf, for me the resemblance of the two marks more than justify a bis repaint. After all, where can we get a decent Bis?

I saw the old hungarian mig-21s almost daily for 4 years and it certainly was fun to get this model painted up for some retro flying from Pápa. I got to sit inside the cockpit as well and it certainly must have been demanding for a pilot to not only fly it, but also to fight with it. Not much you can see out when the canopy comes down.

I really love this model, got a sweet spot for the old migs. I hope this one will be combined with the VRS Tackpack when it goes 3rd party.

Yeah, that would make flying the mig interesting!

When I arrived at Papa the first time the old Migs were parked more or less over the entire base, in the later years they were moved over to the so called "Jurassic Park" on the right side of rw34 (google it and you can see them!). Many have later been sold for scrap. A few are still kept for display in the base itself.

I have started on a trio of other 21's from the last years of flying from Papa;

9178-standard 47 wing decals
6007-this ac had a distinctive decal bellow the canopy with an eagle head and wings with the pilot name (kind of in F-15E fashion)
4025- No 47th wing decals. This ac is currently in the village museum at Magyargencs (which was on my old road bike training route west of Papa) and if you ask the staff they will even open the canopy and let you sit in the cockpit.

I downloaded the plane some time ago, but have really never flown it, I'm generally a ctrl-e sort of guy, but I don't mind manually starting an aircraft if it's this good, problem is there's really no (english) documentation. and the switches in the cockpit aren't labeled. I'm not railing on the dev for not making it in English, it's his baby and he can do what he wants, the original certainly wasn't in english! what I would like to know is A) has anybody made any sort of english startup guide for this beast, or b) is there any way of modifying the aircraft easily so I can Auto Start it with ctrl-e?

Oh, yeah I've seen the video on youtube, doesn't help me much, as I can't reference between it and the sim in real time, and in either case, doesn't explain what any of the switches ARE and why they are being flipped in that manner, which would help me get my head around this plane. I would love to fly this, since I think it looks like a spectacular job of FSX modeling. any help appreciated!

It looks like one of my images explaining the right side of the cockpit is no longer available, so I'll see if I can make a new one. I think many of the functions on that side have tooltips though...
